IDA's May 2005 Auction for the Animals Support IDA's mission to defend the rights, welfare and habitats of animals during IDA's Auction for the Animals on eBay for the month of May. The auction gives you the opportunity to help IDA help animals while having fun bidding on a wide selection of over 250 elegant, exciting and unique items valued at more than $45,000 that have been donated to IDA for this very special online fundraising event. While the auction started on May 1st, the second wave is going on right now and new items will be added for the third wave starting on May 15th. There are many fabulous items to bid on, including fantastic travel and accommodation packages, special celebrity memorabilia, and tickets for great entertainment and sporting events. Visit www.ebay.com/ida to see what's available. Once you find an item that you like, to view its description, the current bid price, and how much time is left until the bidding ends. Place your bid and keep an eye on it to make sure that, by the time the bidding ends, it's YOURS. We are still accepting donated items to sell during the auction, so if you have an item that you would like to contribute, please contact Nicole Otoupalik at (800) 338-4451. All donations are tax deductible. If you already sell on eBay, now is a great time to designate 10-100% of your own auction proceeds to IDA by registering at http://www.missionfish.org/, the partner of eBay Giving Works. 2. Peaceable Kingdom Screening in Marin You are invited to attend a special screening of Tribe of Heart's documentary Peaceable Kingdom in Marin. Peaceable Kingdom is one of the most powerful films ever made about the plight of animals in our society and people's potential for transforming their relationships with animals. Watch " The Dolphin Defender " on KQED Over the last 25 years, filmmaker Hardy Jones has spent more time with dolphins than almost any other person. IDA has been a proud supporter of his work documenting dolphin slaughter in Japan, where thousands of dolphins are mercilessly slaughtered or captured for theme parks every year. His latest documentary, " The Dolphin Defender, " tells the story of his personal crusade to protect these magnificent creatures from the greatest threat to their lives: human beings. See this fascinating and inspiring film for yourself when it airs on KQED, Channel 9, this Sunday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m. If you can't see it then, click here (http://tinyurl.com/c3qdz) for a schedule of encore presentations on KQED. To learn more about Hardy Jones and his efforts to save marine mammals, visit www.bluevoice.org. After you see " The Dolphin Defender, " be sure to call (415) 553-2135 and leave a recorded message letting KQED know how much you enjoyed the program. This will go a long way towards getting more great shows about animals on the air. 5. Proctor & Gamble Global Day of Action IDA has been boycotting Procter & Gamble (P & G) since 1989 because they blind, burn, maim and kill thousands of animals each year in product tests that are cruel, outdated and not required by law. While P & G claims to lead the industry in developing alternatives to animal testing, they continue to test products on animals even while hundreds of other companies have stopped. IDA sponsors a Global Day of Action Against P & G each year to focus attention on their cruelty and hypocrisy. Last year over 140 boycott P & G events took place all over the world - from Auckland to Aberdeen - making it one of the largest days of action of its kind in the world. This year's event takes place on Saturday, May 21st, and we hope you'll join us by organizing or participating in an event. There are plenty of ways to get involved, from staging a protest outside of a P & G facility or a store that sells P & G products to organizing a P & G product return in your community. Contact IDA at (415) 388-9641 or ida for brochures and other materials to distribute. For information about how P & G tortures animals and more ways that you can make a difference, visit www.pandgkills.com/pg_global_2005.html. 6. Be an IDA Foie Gras Sustained Presence Organizer Join IDA and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL) in our outreach campaign directed at restaurants that serve foie gras, the fatty liver of force-fed ducks and geese. We are looking for Bay Area activists who can help with this campaign by maintaining a sustained presence at a restaurant to persuade them to stop serving foie gras. IDA activists have successfully convinced restaurants in San Francisco, San Diego, Philadelphia, Portland, and other U.S. cities to remove foie gras from their menus. We are in need of an organizer in the Bay Area who can keep the momentum going. The campaign will be successful if small groups of people can be outside of the same restaurant on a regular basis (e.g., every night, every Friday, etc.). IDA will provide you with graphic posters depicting dead and dying ducks and videotaped footage from inside foie gras farms taken by APRL during their undercover animal cruelty investigation of the foie gras industry (please see www.StopForceFeeding.com for more information). Large demonstrations are not necessary to make a big difference. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and if diners are faced with graphic images of animals who have died after being violently force-fed, this campaign can be a great success. If you can commit to being in front of a Bay Area restaurant that serves foie gras one, two, or even seven days a week during their busiest hour(s), please contact Kristie Phelps at Kristie or (757) 423-0093. For a list of California restaurants that serve foie gras, please visit www.stopforcefeeding.com/page.php?module=serving & state=CA.
