Guest guest
Hi, I have a question regarding vegan fake meats. My husband has a severe allergy to dairy - type 1 hypersensitivity (not lactose intolernce) which can cause hives and his throat to constrict. I have noticed that when we eat some " vegan " fake meats in Asian restaurants or buy imported " vegan " fake meats in Chinatown, he has a minor oral reaction. The ingredients never list any dairy, and he is not allergic to any other food items. This frequently occurs when we order the " chicken " and less so with the " spare ribs " or " beef " . There is a small chance that this reaction could be psychosomatic, however the results have been very consistent in different situations that I doubt that is the case. Is anyone familiar with the making of these products and would be able to shed any light on what could be the cause of this? Also interesting is that VegeFarms meats that were available on the east coast as of last year which I believe were manufactured in the US did not cuase a reaction, but now the only VegeFarm products I can find (which have a slightly different packaging - plastic wrap vs. box) which may be manufactured in Asia do cause the reaction even though they are the same product. Guest guest
Hi folks, Regarding Nikkita's email and her husband's reaction (who is lactose intolerant) to some of the faux meats in Asian restaurants and imported by grocery stores in Chinatown: Perhaps the equipment used to produce the fake meats also produce other products (i.e. the equipment is not dedicated to just producing faux meats). I know one woman whose husband is vegan and lactose intolerant. He was sensitive enough to have a reaction to some brands of rice milk. Although I'm assuming there are standards for cleaning equipment between batches of food, it could be your husband is just super-sensitive. My other thought - and this has no basis in any fact - just an observation. Has anyone ever been to Ranch 99 (this is a chain grocery store in the Bay Area that has big selection of Asian style foods and sauces, and fake meats)? Chris and I were there a couple of days ago looking at the faux meat ingredients for some of the imported faux meats. Sometimes a faux meat package would list only five ingredients. And it just struck me as really odd that the ingredient list could be that simple. Additionally, a few years ago, Chris and I were talking with a veg restaurant owner who sells faux meats. She told us that she had visited one of the factories where the faux meat is produced. Although none of the faux meats had eggs listed as an ingredient, she was suspicious because she also saw empty egg cartons.
