I would highly recommend the book Fast Food Nation. Although this book does not specifically promote vegetarianism, it really delves into the history of 'fast food' and gives many compelling reasons to support vegetarianism outside of animal cruelty/suffering. It's been awhile since I read the book, but basically the slaughterhouse owners are exploiting both humans and non-humans.
