Guest guest
Not sure if I should use this forum for this question, but here goes (since the success of turning my baking business vegan depends on it). Does anyone know of the above mentioned product? The only usalted margarine I know of is Fleischmanns, and I hear that it is not vegan (as well as being unhealthy). Any leads? Guest guest
Hi Hannah: Fleischmann's used to make a vegan unsalted one, but they changed the formula a few years ago, when many manufacturers seemed to be adding whey to their products. I use Earth Balance " buttery sticks " . It does have some salt, and some olive oil in the blend, but I have used it with good results, plus it's trans-fat free, certainly a selling point for health-conscious non-vegans. You might want to compare the sodium count of unsalted and lightly salted margarines with the sodium count in EB and adjust salt in your recipes accordingly. You might also check with other professional vegan bakers (look on-line, at advertisers in VegNews, Pangea...) to see what they use. (BTW, although I have not baked professionally for some time, I do bake a lot, and would love to chat with you off-line sometime). Best, Shelley Shelley M. Samuels Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light that is in exact proportion to them will flood the room. --Simone Weil - " girl_veggie " <hannahtai Thursday, December 08, 2005 10:21 PM Vegan unsalted non-hyrodgenated margarine > Not sure if I should use this forum for this question, but here goes > (since the success of turning my baking business vegan depends on it). > Does anyone know of the above mentioned product? Guest guest
My daughters are vegan and love Earth Balance, and use it in making their vegan cookies. They are starting up a vegan cookie company in Santa Cruz, Yum Yum Cookies, and use it exclusively for their baking, though it's more expensive than regular margerines. It's pretty tasty. I keep it in the house for when they come, and use it myself as well. Here's a link if you want to know more. http://www.earthbalance.net/product.html Good luck, Margi Days - " girl_veggie " <hannahtai Thursday, December 08, 2005 10:21 PM Vegan unsalted non-hyrodgenated margarine > Not sure if I should use this forum for this question, but here goes > (since the success of turning my baking business vegan depends on it). > Does anyone know of the above mentioned product? Guest guest
Hi Hannah, I have heard of people using spectrum non-hydrogenated palm shortening with great success in baking...I believe it is made of palm oil, and unsalted, acting a lot like crisco in baking. I haven't personally used it, but have tasted cookies and scones made with it that were delicious. You might also look into using coconut oil, which is full of health benefits, and unsalted as well! Good luck, Alyssa
