Guest guest
I'm interested in taking a 1-2 week vacation this coming summer-- a real vacation, not just a trip to visit family or old friends--, and I'd love to go somewhere veggie-friendly. Does anyone have suggestions on cities, hotels, organized trips, etc. that are either veggie-friendly or cater towards veggies? And also, if anyone has taken the VegVoyages trip to India, I'd love to hear your opinions. Many thanks, Becca
Guest guest
Regarding India and other countries: oh, goodness. VegVoyages? In most of India one has to *try* to eat meat, rather than not to -- small restaurants proudly proclaim whatever meat dishes they do serve on boards/menus. I travelled the simple way, though, and things might be different in expensive hotels and resorts. India was the most vegetarian friendly country in my experience of travelling across 22 countries of Eurasia. South East Asian countries were almost as good/easy, although it too thorough explanations to the locals that shrimp aren't a veg-friendly condiment. The only areas where vegetarian eating was difficult were China, the Punjab, and the Middle East -- that said, it was still possible with effort, and I loved those countries. Don't limit yourself to VegVoyages. Besides, simple (i.e. ideally less corporate, smaller scale, more local) living is as much a part of broad-minded vegetarianism as what we eat; this is the case when travelling as well. Go to India and ask the Indians what veggies to eat. Talk to other people in the world and they will be interested in your vegetarianism and offer advice as you go. Just my two cents. I hope you find a great holiday! ~*~ Maureen On 31-Dec-05, at 4:30 PM, Becca Hirschman wrote: > I'm interested in taking a 1-2 week vacation this coming summer-- a > real vacation, not just a trip to visit family or old friends--, and > I'd love to go somewhere veggie-friendly. Guest guest
If you are travelling to Europe, Netherlands and Switzerland are vegetarian friendly. Even Mc.Donalds server veggie burger in those countries. Netherlands is best in spring if you want to see tulip fields before they harvest. I would suggest Interlaken in swiss (about 1hr drive from bearne, the capital) and to avoid zurich. Zurich is just another big city. Throughout India you would find more vegetarian friendly restaurants. In Southern India, you would find most restaurants serving only vegetarian food. Guest guest
Becca, Here's a great vacation idea for vegans ... Go on a " Sustainable Energy in Motion Bike Tour " in Oregon! They offer rides varying from one week to three weeks long. http://www.portlandpeace.org/ Here is a copy and paste from their FAQ list ... Normally I would just provide the link, but I'm cutting and pasting the info here, since I think it would be of great interest for people (like me) who read the Digest in the e-mail Inbox and, if not interested in a bike tour, woul just skip the message without clicking on the link. As you'll read below, the meals on the bike tour will be totally vegan ... not vegan friendly, or " with a vegetarian option available " ... nope, totally vegan! Isn't that awesome? I hope this kind of thing becomes more common in the future! OK, here's the FAQ cut and paste for your perusing pleasure ... ************************************************** " What about meals & camping / housing fees? " We provide three healthy, nutritious meals daily that are mostly organic, locally sourced, and vegan. We also cover the costs of camping or other accommodations. " I understand organic and locally-sourced food. But why vegan? " Several reasons. All else being equal, a vegan diet is more sustainable than a non-vegan diet: the amount of food required to feed animals to obtain the same quantity of food in meat, dairy, or egg form is far greater than were that same amount of food consumed directly by humans. In other words, it might require 10 lbs of grain to produce three lbs of food in the form of egg, dairy, or meat. In its vegan form, more food (10 lbs) is available for consumption, reducing the ecological footprint. In line with one of our ten values (link), we interpret .ecological wisdom. as inflicting minimal damage on living beings. Non-violence is another value towards which we strive, interpreted here as minimal violence against other living beings. Meat is a luxury for many of the poor of the world, for whom basic plant foods provide the primary sustenance. In recognition of this imbalance, we act in solidarity with those individuals in our dietary choices. Veganism is, for most Americans, a deviation from the normal diet. Since this trip is largely about exposure to alternatives, providing all-vegan meals accomplishes this for many participants. ************************************************* END OF CUT AND PASTE ... I'm thinking of doing one of the three-week tours this summer. If anybody else is interested in going, e-mail me ... it would be great to share info on our plans and share our experiences when we get back. Happy vegan vacationing, Becca! -Rachel ************************************************** , " Becca Hirschman " <r_a_hirschman> wrote: > > I'm interested in taking a 1-2 week vacation this coming summer-- a > real vacation, not just a trip to visit family or old friends--, and > I'd love to go somewhere veggie-friendly. Guest guest
If you're looking for a low-impact vacation (ie. to a country that speaks the same language, western toilet facilities, and zero chance of nasty intestinal infections), I would recommend Melbourne, Australia. The city itself is beautiful with tons of nightlife, and adventure / nature are a short drive away from the city. It is also one of the most vegan / veggie friendly cities I've ever been to. On the other hand, if you're looking to go during our summer months, the seasons are reversed between the hemispheres, so it's more fun to go during our winter.
