Guest guest
Santa Cruz County animal control is short on cage space, due to legal proceedings where they must hold a large number of fighting roosters and neglected chickens until the case is decided in court. As a result, cage space is extremely limited and there is no room for all the bunnies. Bunnies make great indoor companions (or outdoor if you do a huge amount of predator-proofing) and they're vegetarian! They can be extremely friendly. If you would like a bunny (or to foster home a bunny), contact Heather at rabbit haven: http://therabbithaven.org/ Or contact animal services: http://www.scanimalservices.us/ Here's some info on predator-proofing (written for chickens, but it's the same idea): http://chicken.meetup.com/3/boards/view/viewthread?thread=1462058 Thanks, Cheryl
Guest guest
I'm guessing that a number of shelter bunnies have ended up there because they were rescued from meat operations and backyard breeders. There's a bunny on a local rescue's website who was surrendered by a wannabe " vegetarian " who was only going to eat animals she slaughtered herself! (Strange ethics.) If anyone decides that 2006 is the year to add a bunny or two or three to their family, I will be glad to help you the best I can from my own experience, and to assist with setting up their new home. You haven't lived until you've experienced kisses from a bunny with cilantro breath! --Candace , " brunoandherman " <brunoandherman> wrote: > > Santa Cruz County animal control is short on cage space, due to > legal proceedings where they must hold a large number of fighting > roosters and neglected chickens until the case is decided in court. > As a result, cage space is extremely limited and there is no room > for all the bunnies. Guest guest
Actually, I think a lot of the rabbits came from private homes where they didn't spay the males. When I was a kid, we had rabbits, and discovered that " Cindy " was really " Sidney " and got quite a few in a short period of time. Luckily, my great grandfather and uncle were carpenters and built me some great homes for them. But most people will just dump them at a shelter, or outside, or whatever they do. Rabbits can be litter-box trained and are very intelligent and many are quite affectionate. I highly recommend them for veg people, as they are just as great as dogs and cats for companions, and you don't have any dietary issues... I found out that other shelters also have bunnies on " death row " and need homes immediately. The best way, IMHO, is to contact Heather at Rabbit Haven as she knows which bunnies are about to be killed and can give you all kinds of great information on care. Also, it sounds like Candace is an experienced bunny person, so you have lots of help to get started! If you can't commit longterm, you can foster care a bunny and save its life! Here are the other shelters about to euthanize bunnies, and the Rabbit Haven website again: Monterey SPCA http://www.spcamc.org/ Salinas Animal Control http://www.ci.salinas.ca.us/Police/DEpdansh.html Rabbit Haven (coordinates rescues from shelters) http://www.therabbithaven.org/ Thanks, Cheryl
