Guest guest
I was just told that the KFC on Valencia in SF has closed! One down, a few more to go! Guest guest
Great news. This is the second KFC that we've been targeting that has closed. The first being the KFC on El Camino in Palo Alto. Candace lead the effort there, and is now focused on the remaining Palo Alto KFC location on San Antonio. I know that our local KFC in Pacifica is never busy, and it's hard to see how they stay in business - so maybe they'll be next :-) Chris On Behalf Of Thea LangsamTuesday, January 31, 2006 9:57 AMBay Area Veg; Bay Area AR Network KFC closed! Guest guest
I've been trying to bring that eyesore (and stomach-sore) down for years. Good job to all involved in the demise of another cruelty-ridden crappy fast-food franchise!! On the other side of the coin, and in & around the very large coin bag containing the coin, " franchise " is the operative word describing what had been closed. In addition to the KFC stores, " Yum! Brands, Inc. " (what a perverse irony in a name), has some 34,000 fast food restaurants world-wide (including: KFC, A & W, Long John Silver's, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell) -- just as a comparison, that's 2000 *more* than McDonald's. [1] The real stickler is this: " Yum " franchises an inordinately high number of these restaurants -- around 75%. [2] For no or very little financial commitment, daddy YumBucks can rapidly expand their brand (very globally), reap enormous profits, and let the little guy face the " local heat " . (Suffering " customers " and their modern expectations of " customer-service " , all protests aside, has to rate around Dante's 7th or 8th circle of hell). [3] Of course, some franchisees are themselves " big business " , but some are merely poor schlepps who didn't " think " about what they were getting into (or simply didn't know), and just wanted to earn a semi-honest buck (meanwhile shelling out $1.1 - $1.7 mil, plus $25k license fee, + 4% royalties). [4] *This* is why I thought the action last year taken by Pamela Anderson (with PETA) was particularly brilliant (a word used perhaps infrequently in conjunction with Pamela Anderson) -- they sent a Kentucky Fried Cruelty video to each of the KFC chain's *managers*. (Of course, the managers were instructed by HQ to throw away the video w/o opening the envelope.) [1] So, in this sense, protesting & closing the local KFC's does (at the very least) discourage local franchises... (a good thing! don't get me wrong!) ...But, also, it's kind of like shooting messengers, while the author is busy at work not only writing & publishing but also translating into other languages. " Yum " has out-sourced & insulated itself against the financial risk. Cut off one head, another will grow. You know what I wish would be in the international news (e.g., instead of and/or in addition to Google's semi-censored search-site in China)? It's the proliferation of fast-food franchises in emerging international markets (in particular: China). [5] Here, in the US, at least a portion of the populace has " caught on " to the dealings & amorality of Big Business.... But abroad, there's nothing more " American " than McDonald's. It's a terrible warping, repackaging & re-selling of " America " , selling " democracy " one chicken leg at a time. (You can't imagine how depressing it was to see a " Subway " franchise in the Delhi (India) airport selling a " Chicken Shwarma Sub " ... Yes, true story. Sooo much great, traditional, culturally vegetarian food; yet, another billion potential McDonald's customers.... who's gonna win?) [6] (An aside: Asked of me while abroad -- " Do you eat all the time at McD & drink Coke-a-cola? " " No, I'm veg & don't drink soda (or anything w/ HFCS) " ; and, upon asking of they'd heard of " apple pie " : " What's pie? " (Lit: " Pie? Was ist das? " ) ...We may have our own self-image & " story of us (U.S.) " & our " culture " , but others' image of us has been created, without our input, by corporations marketing products tailored to an international customer -- such as cheeseburgers, fried chicken & " American " cigarettes -- all in our name, as prototypical " american " ). No real point here, other than people should probably also boycott A & W, Long John Silver's, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell as well. (Like anyone on this list actually eats at these places.) Oh, and, be kind to the managers of these places. They're victims of KFC & " Yum " , too. No need to add insult to injury. " Don't be evil " (a lyric from google's songbook -- and if only the MSG merchants could at least *pretend* to not be evil), -Michael ps: Chemical analysis of KFC's " secret " recipe found exceptionally high levels of MSG -- 2%, exceeding some countries' regulatory levels (eg India), but perfectly acceptable other, underdeveloped countries such as the U.S.... [1] pps: Sorry this turned out to be a rant. It's original intent was to be constructive (a *constructive* rant against " Yum " , vs. just a regular ol' rant), really, it was.... references: [1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KFC , http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yum! Guest guest
Hi folks Michael, thanks for the original & informative message, particularly the footnotes. It prompted me to share a link that folks on this list, particularly those involved in supporting PETA's anti-KFC campaign, may be interested in: http://yuminvestors.com/ Cheers, Tammy Bay Area Vegetarianswww.BayAreaVeg.org
