Guest guest
VERY URGENT: ANIMAL LEGISLATIVE ALERT ! PLEASE ACT NOW !!! Dear Friend of animals, If you care about animals, PLEASE make 5 phone calls and/or send 5 e-mails AS SOON AS YOU CAN, today for the e-mails and tomorrow morning for phone calls. Two calls re: the cat & dog fur ban; 2 calls re lab animals; and 1 call re manatees. Re the first four calls, Congress will adjourn very soon and if these bills don't pass, the process will have to start all over again with the next session of Congress, and millions of animals could perish in the meantime. Even if you don't live in their area, please also call them to pass your urgent plea. Because all those issues are national issues. Thanks so much for the urgent action ! Thanks again. Citizens Concerns ================================ @@@ DOG & CAT FUR BAN NEEDS YOUR URGENT HELP: Rep's. Phil Crane (R-IL / 8th) and Bill Archer (R-TX / 7th) are the key House negotiators on the pending legislation to prohibit dog & cat fur products. Crane is chairman of the Trade Subcommittee and Archer is chairman of the Ways & Means Committee. They are locked in a battle with Sen. Finance Committee chairman Bill Roth (R-DE) over which version - House or Senate - of the dog & cat fur legislation will be finally enacted. Sen. Roth's version is MUCH stronger - its provisions will ensure effective enforcement of the ban and labeling so that consumers know what they are buying. The House version could lead to a ban " on the books " that is not actually enforced. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Call Rep's Crane and Archer TODAY, and urge them to AGREE to Senator Bill Roth's version of the dog & cat fur legislation, to ensure the strongest possible enforcement of the ban on these horrendous products. If you happen to live in their districts (Crane: Chicago's West suburbs; Archer: Houston area), be sure to say you are a CONSTITUENTS ! Rep. Crane's Trade Subcommittee office: 202/225-6649 (fax: 202/226-0158); Rep. Bill Archer's Ways & Means Committee office: (202/225-3625). (even if you are not constituents, please also CALL THEM. c.c.) ================================= @@@ LAB ANIMAL BILLS HANG IN THE BALANCE: Time is running out in the 106th Congress. This week, two important bills are on the floor awaiting full Senate approval: H.R. 4281, the " ICCVAM " bill that will encourage federal agencies to accept non-animal product testing methods instead of animal tests, and S. 2725 that will establish sanctuaries for chimpanzees who are no longer used in medical research but languish in expensive, inhumane lab cages. The ICCVAM bill passed the House by voice vote on October 17th, and we must have the Senate approve this House version of the legislation. (For more info on these bills, see issue #110 or visit http://www.hsus.org/programs/government/leglineup.html) WHAT YOU CAN DO: Call and urge your two Senators to support both of these bills - S. 2725 and H.R. 4281 (be sure to say you want the House ICCVAM bill approved) - on the Senate floor and get them enacted before Congress adjourns (call the switchboard at 202/224-3121 or visit www.senate.gov). PHONE CALLS ARE THE BEST way to reach your Senators! ============================================= " CRUNCHIN' BONES " : A DEADLY TREAT: In issue # 107, we alerted you to the lethal threat that certain kinds of food containers can pose to wild animals foraging through trash for snacks. In the past, Yoplait yogurt containers have been identified as a deadly trap for many wild skunks, squirrels, and other animals who suffocate when their heads become wedged inside the containers because of their odd design. Recently, a dog treat container was responsible for the similar, tragic death of another animal victim: a 2 ½ year-old German Shepherd named Ally. On August 18th, Ally's owner returned to her home to find that Ally had gotten her head stuck in an empty " Crunchin' Bones " container and had suffocated. While Ally had no trouble pushing through the container's flimsy, push-top lid, she was unable to extricate her head once wedged inside the barrel-shaped container. The reaction from the " Crunchin' Bones " manufacturer? A glib response that " the barrel is a good marketing container for our Crunchin' Bones, but it wasn't intended for your pets to play with. " WHAT YOU CAN DO: Write to the Sunshine Mills company and tell them that you are outraged that they would place profits over the value of the lives of so many of our pets! Let them know that you consider the design of their Crunchin' Bones container to be irresponsible and dangerous! In Issue # 105, we reported on the disappointing decision of the Victoria's Secret company to feature 2 pages of fur garments in its Fall 2000 catalog. Now, thanks to the thousands of letters and phone calls from concerned customers, Victoria' Secret has recently opted to pull its fur garments from its Holiday 2000 catalog! While this is a great blow against the cruel fur industry, the next major step will be to convince Victoria's Secret to maintain this fur-free policy permanently. Company executives are meeting NOW to decide whether or not they want to feature fur garments in next year's catalog! WHAT YOU CAN DO: Contact the Executive Vice President of Victoria's Secret and thank her for choosing compassion and public sentiment over profit! Also encourage her to maintain a fur-free policy permanently! Write to: Mary Ellen Coyne, Executive Vice President/ General Merchandise Manager, 1114 Avenue of the Americas, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10036 / ph: 212-403-9216 / email: http://www.victoriassecret.com/html/custsrvc/contact/ =================================== @@@ LAST PUSH FOR MANATEES: Remember-Thursday, October 19th marks the opening of the " Manatee Summit " convened by Florida Governor Jeb Bush in Tallahassee. Drop Governor Bush a quick note or phone message and thank him for his efforts toward manatee protection and urge him to continue to withstand pressure from boating industry lobbyists to weaken manatee protection! Call (850-488-4441), fax (850-487-0801) or email jeb TODAY ! ======================================= Above messages are from : HUMANElines A project of The Humane Society of the United States and The Fund for Animals (202) 955-3663 or E-mail humanelines http://www.hsus.org/programs/government/humanelines.html --- Issue #115 --- October 18, 2000 For more information on legislation, how to find your legislators, and past HUMANElines, visit http://www.hsus.org or http://www.fund.org
