Those in Seattle are urged to attend the public hearing on this important

matter. It's rare for NMFS to hold public hearings but they're under heavy

court scrutiny to produce a " waterproof " document.

The FR notice announcing the availability of the " Draft Environmental

Assessment on Issuing a Quota to the Makah Indian Tribe for a

Subsistence Hunt on Gray Whales for the Years 2001 and 2002 " filed

yesterday and will publish in the Federal Register on Tuesday or

Wednesday of next week.

Comments on the draft EA should be submitted by February 16, 2000. A

public hearing will be held in Seattle, Washington on February 1st.
