URGENT, BARBARIC , SHAMFUL CONTEST

TO KILL COYOTES IN UTAH !!!

Speak Out Against Coyote Contest Hunts in Utah

Today, in Utah, coyotes are being slaughtered as part of a contest hunt,

deceptively called the " First Annual Predator Control Survey. "

The hunt is organized by a coalition of Utah hunters who claim this is

the first of many killing contests they plan to hold in the state over

the next year. In Utah, as in many other states, coyotes are considered

varmints and are classified as " not protected " wildlife. As a result, it

is legal to hunt coyotes year-round without a state license or permit

and there is no limit on the number that can be killed.

In contest hunts, contestants compete to see who can kill the most

coyotes within a specified period of time. The winners receive prizes.

This particular contest is already underway and is planned to continue

until June.

While there is no designated area that the coyotes must be hunted in,

the organizers of the contest, and most of its sponsors, live in the

Uinta Basin on the south slope of the Uinta Mountains in northeast Utah.

Several local and regional businesses are sponsoring this event, most of

which are listed below with contact information.

These businesses are offering $2,000 in cash and prizes to the hunters

who bring in the most coyote tails or ears by the end of the hunt.

3 : Write letters to the editors of Utah local newspapers criticizing

the CONTEST HUNT :

The following are all the email addresses for Utah Newspapers :

a: The Salt Lake Tribune :

the.editors (at sltrib.com)

b: Desert News :

releases (at desnews.com )

e: The Herald Journal :

hjnews (at hjnews.com )

Other than the above points , you may want to include the following

POINTS in your letters to them too :

1. The pointless killing of any species is morally repugnant,

especially as part of a contest where prizes are

AWARDED FOR KILLING .

2. Random killing of coyotes, as in contest hunts, has not been

scientifically Shown to result in a reduction of coyote depredation

on deer and elk fawns, contrary to what hunters often claim.

In fact, random killing of coyotes may actually exacerbate

perceived problems as lethal control can cause pack members to

disperse, llows more coyotes to reproduce, and encourages

increased pup survival rates because of decreased competition for

food and habitat.

3. The coyote is one of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games mascots

(along with the black bear and the snowshoe hare), to be held in Salt

Lake City, Utah, not far from where the contest is being held.

We should show respect for these animals, not harass and kill them.

4. Killing contests teach our children to disrespect wildlife; studies

have shown there is a clear link between hunting and violence

toward domestic animals and people.
