According to reports, New York resident Cyril Wagner told investigators that he killed the swan in self-defense with one swing of a titanium driver. Wagner's reported argument was that he was protecting two children and himself from the " aggressive " swan. However, according to Dr. Salvatore Zeitlin, veterinarian for the Palm Beach Zoo at Dreher Park, black swans, like the one killed by Wagner, typically are not dangerous. In fact, there has never been a documented case of a person who has been killed as a result of a swan attack. I understand that you and your department have been very progressive in investigating this case. I would like to thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to urge you to turn up the heat on the case against Mr. Wagner. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty against animals do not stop there; many of them progress to committing violent acts against their fellow humans. The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders. Animal abuse is not just the result of a minor personality flaw in the abuser, but a symptom of a deep disturbance. As a society, we must call a halt to the acceptance of animal cruelty and enforce a policy of harsh punishment for these sadistic crimes. To allow individuals guilty of perpetrating such cruel and violent acts to go unpunished or not sufficiently punished, would be to sanction these horrific crimes and would permit them to go on to commit serious and violent crimes against innocent human beings. Therefore, I am asking that the harshest penalty be imposed against Mr. Wagner. There is no excuse for the agony, suffering, and anguish that he has caused. In addition, I strongly suggest that he receive mandatory psychological counseling, be prohibited from ever owning or harboring animals, and be institutionalized and not allowed back into society until he has paid for his vicious, anti-social behavior. PLEASE RECOGNIZE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THIS CRIME. SEND TO: Governor Jeb Bush Telephone: 850-488-4441 Fax: 850-487-0801 Email: fl_governor Dear Governor Bush: I am contacting you in regard to Beethoven, a 9 year old Great Dane who currently lives on death row under Florida animal control. According to reports, the fate of Beethoven lies in your hands. I would like to take this opportunity to plead with you for Beethoven's release. It is reported that Beethoven is currently under the care of animal control for biting a young girl approximately five years ago. The records of the case indicate that Beethoven was chained in his family's garage, during which time his owners began to engage in conversation with a neighboring family who entered their driveway. While the families spoke, the visiting child wandered into the garage, where she was bitten while unobserved. Prior to this instance, Beethoven did not have a violent history. Therefore, it has been rightly speculated that Beethoven bit the child not because he is vicious, but because something was done to provoke him to react suddenly. This is clearly a case where children are allowed to trespass and not be held accountable. The parents of the child are at fault here, not the dog or even his owners. Beethoven was properly chained in his home and this child wandered inside uninvited and under no parental supervision. For centuries we have been sharing our homes with canines with safety as the most common reason. It makes no logical or legal sense to kill our dogs for protecting our private property, while located on our private property. The fact of the matter is, the facts in this case warrant clemency, as it was never determined what the child did to Beethoven to elicit his response and the dog was not violent with an entire group of girls just prior to this incident. In addition, in 1994, New Jersey Governor Whitman pardoned Taro, an Akita facing death for biting a 10 year old, so there is a precedent. Please spare Beethoven's life and immediately grant him clemency. The average lifespan of a Great Dane is 8-10 years. Beethoven has been in his jail cell for 5 years now. He deserves to live out the rest of his life in peace. SEND TO: Honorable Ronald Legendre Osceola County Courthouse 12 S. Vernon Avenue, Room A-101 Kissimmee, FL 34741 Telephone: 407-343-2509 Dear Judge Legendre: I am contacting you in regard to the case against Cecil Todd Yates. According to reports, Yates committed a horrific case of animal cruelty when he willingly starved hundreds of confined cattle in Osceola County. Reports further indicate that Yates made no attempt to provide even the most basic care for the animals, not even water. This is all despite the fact that there are literally dozens of organizations that would have come to Yates' aide if he had asked. He never even bothered. Leavitt 210 Utah State Capitol Bldg. Salt Lake City, Utah 84114 Telephone: 801-538-1000 Fax: 801-538-1528 Email: governor COPY: John Kimball, Director Utah Division of Wildlife Resources PO Box 146301 Salt Lake City, UT 84114-6301 Fax: (801) 538-4745 Email: wcomment.nrdwr Dear Governor Leavitt: I am contacting you in regard to the First Annual Predator Control Survey. I understand that this is a deceptive title for a coyote slaughtering contest that is currently underway in the state of Utah. The hunt is reportedly organized by a coalition of Utah hunters who claim this is the first of many killing contests they plan to hold over the next year. The pointless killing of any species is morally repugnant, especially as part of a contest where prizes are awarded for killing. Hunting is further condemned by most American citizens because of its horrifying ramifications, namely the link between cruelty to animals and violence towards domestic animals and humans. In addition, the random killing of coyotes has not been scientifically shown to result in a reduction of coyote depredation on deer and elk fawns, contrary to what hunters often claim. In fact, random killing of coyotes may actually exacerbate perceived problems, as lethal control can cause pack members to disperse, allows more coyotes to reproduce, and encourages increased pup survival rates because of decreased competition for food and habitat. There are too many ethical and logical reasons to oppose these hunting contests. I respectfully request that you join the masses and not only publicly condemn these disgraceful and cruel hunts, but work to put an immediate stop to the barbarism that is currently allowed to occur in Utah. Until this barbaric killing behavior is permanently banned in the state of Utah, neither I nor my family and friends will be visiting your state, or purchasing any products or services produced in Utah. In addition, I will encourage everyone I know and come into contact with to do the same. Thank you for your time.
