Dear Mr. Storm,

 

I'm extremely disappointed that your press release stated that you

adopt those meat industry's " animal handling " standards. As you know,

American Meat Institute (AMI) ; the United Egg Producers (UEP) ,

and the National Chicken Council (NCC) are all " killing " industries.

Those meat industries have no compassion and humanity to animals

whatsoever. To them, sentient animals are " things " and " machines " .

How could you adopt killing industry's standards ? Animals no doubt

will continue to be skinned and dismembering alive on the very fast

" killing line " !

 

I'm requesting you to adopt the real requirements from animals humane

groups standards, especially PETA's humane requirements to you.

If you continue the cruelty on millions of animals sacrificed for your

" profits " , then we will have no choice but to advise all of our members

and relatives stop going to Burger Kings ! And we will also inform

all of our local media about Burger King's continuous cruelty on

animals.

 

In a " Petition for Enforcement of Humane Slaughter and Animal Cruelty

Laws, " presented to the office of Washington State Attorney General

Christine Gregoire, IBP-Wallula Slaughterhouse employees admit that

stun operators routinely fail to render cattle unconscious and that

workers are allowed to stick, dismember and skin kicking and

screaming animals.

 

Numerous affidavits attest to human injuries and gruesome animal

suffering. Perhaps most shocking is Affidavit #3, paragraph 4, in which

an employee recounts the brutal dismemberment process in which

30 percent of cows remain fully aware. The IBP worker describes animals

who feel the " belly ripper " slice through their stomachs or the

" tail ripper " slash open their rectums.

 

Some cows are still alert when the " first legger " flays their hind legs

and severs their feet. Still others are cognizant as the " first butter "

skins them from breast to belly. These maimed creatures are often alive

when hung upside down from a trolley hook, jabbed into an exposed

foot joint. " I can tell these cows are alive, " the worker contends,

" because they're holding their heads up and a lot of times

they make noise. "

 

One can only imagine the undue terror and pain these animals undergo.

Sentient beings with a central nervous system-such as cows, pigs or

chickens-do not require human intellect to feel fear and pain. Moreover,

unsanitary conditions within the IBP-Wallula Slaughterhouse result in

meat products contaminated with pus, excrement, hair and dirt. The

unsafe environment also leads to worker injuries.

 

I'm politely demand Burger King to immediately draft policies for all of

its suppliers which provide for the humane treatment of farm animals.

Please address each of the following issues:

 

1.) Require all contracted slaughterhouses to employ at least two

stunners to render each animal fully unconscious before he/she is

dismembered, skinned or killed. Please include chickens, who in the U.S.,

are merely paralyzed in electrified water baths. Imprecise mechanical

blades slash the throats of alert birds, many of whom fall from metal

shackles to wander dazed through pools of blood before a worker

stabs them. At feather-extraction scalding tanks, conscious birds are

submerged in boiling water.

 

2.) Subject ALL Burger King suppliers to unscheduled audits by

animal-care professionals and must permit an animal advocacy

organization or PETA to inspect the premises in order to confirm

a scrupulous audit.

 

3.) Insist that suppliers humanely euthanize downed animals, those too

ill or injured to stand, or reach food and water. Specify that animals

not be dragged with chains or pushed with tractors and forklifts on to

mounds of dead and decaying animals. Ban the practice of keeping

mangled, sick animals alive in order to process them into food for

humans.

 

4.) Stop buying eggs from suppliers that give hens less than 72 square

inches of space per bird, and phase out purchases from suppliers that

raise hens in " battery " cages. Most egg-laying hens are crammed seven

or eight to a tiny cage and can not even stretch their wings.

Battery cages are already illegal in much of Europe.

5.) Do not procure eggs from suppliers who utilize " forced molting " -the

10-14 day starvation of hens to bolster egg production. Illegal in the

United Kingdom, this cruel practice predisposes hens and their eggs to

Salmonella infection and other foodborne illnesses.

 

6.) Only buy chickens from suppliers who provide ample space for birds to

move freely and engage in natural behaviors, such as nesting, sunning or

food-foraging. Never do business with operations who debeak their birds.

Chickens are frequently stacked by the tens of thousands in windowless

warehouses where they stand in feces from birth to death. To reduce

stress-related fighting, they're debeaked with no anesthesia. After

blades slice through bone, cartilage and soft tissue, the birds peck

obsessively, suggesting chronic pain in the mutilated beak area.

 

7.) Implement humane procedures for chicken capture within the sheds.

Currently, almost one-third of laying hens sustain bone breaks when

transferred from cage to slaughterhouse.

 

8.) Stipulate that Burger King suppliers do not genetically breed

chickens for upper-body weight. Unnaturally large birds cannot support

their own weight. Many crippled birds starve to death within inches

of food, before reaching their slaughter weight at 6-weeks-old.

 

9.) Do not work with farms that confine sows in gestation stalls, where

the impregnated and nursing pigs live on bare cement in their own

excrement. When their 4-month pregnancy cycle ends, they're

immobilized in farrowing crates where 10 or more piglets nurse, but

cannot touch their mother. These inhumane confinement systems are

illegal in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Holland.

 

 

The old saying- " They'll be slaughtered for food anyway. Why bother? "

-no longer placates an increasingly aware public. Please institute

reforms

to regulate your contracted slaughterhouses and breeding facilities.

" Fast food " does not need to be produced so swiftly and inexpensively

that millions of animals suffer agonizing mistreatment.

Problem: Although the U.S. Department of Agriculture has finally

agreed to extend its regulatory oversight to birds, rats, and mice,

the biomedical community has rallied to prevent this regulation.

Researchers are lobbying Congress to stop the Department of

Agriculture from covering birds, rats, and mice. Congress needs to

hear from animal advocates immediately.

* Please Do not weaken the Animal Welfare Act. The Act is the only

legal accountability there is for those who use animals and the only

protection animals in biomedical research have.

 

* Public sentiment overwhelmingly supports the inclusion of BIRDS,

responsibilities.

 

* Birds, rats, and mice constitute 95 percent of the animals used in

research. One reason these animals are the primary animals used in

research is because, to date, there has been no regulatory

oversight, and researchers have been free to abuse these animals

with impunity. This is also why birds, rats, and mice are the

primary animals used in cruel student science programs.

TELL LOTT TO ALLOW SENATE TO VOTE ON COCKFIGHTING:

 

As reported on ABC World News Tonight's recently-aired, special

investigative report on cockfighting, Senate Majority Leader Trent

Lott (R-MS) was responsible for blocking passage of S. 345, the

federal anti-cockfighting bill, in the last Congress. Although

sponsors of S. 345 say that the bill would pass overwhelmingly if put

to a vote, Senator Lott for months refused to allow S. 345 (which

will bar the interstate transport of fighting birds) to be voted on

in the Senate. Now a new bill has been introduced (also called S.

345) and it's time Senator Lott allows the Senate to vote on it.

The Mississippi Sheriffs' Association and Mississippi Veterinary

Medical Association have endorsed this legislation.

 

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

 

Word has it that after the ABC News report, cockfighters have been

flooding Lott's office with PHONE CALLS of support. Senator Lott

must hear from the thousands of animal protectionists who want to ban

CAMPAIGN 4 :

 

VIOLENCE AND ANIMAL CRUELTY IN U.S. PRISONS:

 

In an act of cruelty reminiscent of the The Green Mile, a prison guard in

New York state deliberately crushed to death a box of kittens found in an

inmate's cell. According to reports, Sergeant Ronald Hunlock ordered the

inmate to drop the kittens in a trash compactor. When the man refused,

Hunlock picked up the kittens himself, dumped them into the trash

compactor, and turned it on, crushing the kittens to death. The kittens'

mother, a cat named Midnight, escaped by running across the prison yard,

and is now being cared for at a local animal shelter. Hunlock pled not

guilty, and at an April 3rd arraignment, a judge denied his lawyer's

request for bail reduction. Hunlock will appear in court again for a

preliminary hearing on April 10th.

You can help the prosecution by sending letters of support,

Asking for a stern sentence for Mr. Hunlock.

TEXAS EXOTIC ANIMAL BILL NEEDS YOUR HELP:

 

Texas is one of the few states that does not regulate exotic animal

ownership. As a result, Texas has more animal attacks that injure and

kill people than the rest of the U.S. combined! HB 1362, a bill to

regulate the ownership of exotic animals (such as lions and tigers) has

been moving through the Texas legislature but has just run into a snag:

Texan State Senator David Cain, who has failed to commit his support so

far, may be planning to attach an amendment to HB 1362 that will exempt

USDA licensed owners!

 

This amendment would be disastrous for HB 1362, as it will essentially

gut the bill.

for 10 to 14 days to manipulate egg production. They are driven crazy

with cruelty, which is why eggs make people sick.

Many eggs contain Salmonella, a potentially fatal foodborne disease

that can kill babies and senior citizens and cause arthritis.

Dear sirs,

 

Would you mind if I ask you to cooperate with us in making protests

against Japanese TV company? I want to have them apologize and

stop the cruel TV program.

 

There are only 5 main commercial broadcasting stations in Japan, but

we are really disappointed at their vulgar and cruel shows.

Although we have asked them to stop making cruel programs so

many times, they never stop it. I hope if many worldwide people would

protest against it, Japanese companies would change their minds.

 

The company's name is " NIPPON TV " , and the title of program is

" SUSUNU! DENPA SHONEN "

which shows some funny stories.

 

The program shows that 15 girls could survive and escape from a

desert island. Everybody thoughts that the company would fake, and

provide necessary goods with the girls.

 

The girls were not really suffered from starvation and thirsty.

 

The shocking show was on air at Mar.25, 2001 :

 

The girls said that they needed the meat of bantams to get energies

For the departure from the island. And they caught a wild bantam, then

they began to beat it with sticks in a crowd, laughing and saying:

" It is insolence! " " We have spoiled the bantams until today! "

 

The beaten bantam could not die. They said " why don't we cut its

throat? " at last.

 

And they roasted the bantam whole.

They were satisfied with the meat, and said " we made a good decision

today. "
