STOP OIL DRILLING IN ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGEE !!!

ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGEE IS IN DANGER NOW !!!

LET'S MAKE EFFORTS TO SAVE THEM NOW !!!

Dear Friend of animals,

The Congress is eyeing one of the most precious pristine places

--> THE ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

for oil drilling as part of the new proposed " Energy Bill "

and Budget bill.

As expected, oil exploration in the Arctic Refuge emerged as a

component of Sen. Murkowski's (R-Alaska) ENERGY bill

(S. 388, the National Security Energy Act of 2001).

Although the Murkowski bill is not expected to move rapidly

through the Senate, the bill is considered a " place holder " for the

President's soon-to-be-released ENERGY package.

The administration has now indicated that it will send its broader

energy package, crafted by an energy task force led by Vice President

Cheney, to Congress in late April. President Bush supported opening

of the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling during his campaign, and it is

expected to be a component of his energy proposal.

President Bush's proposed budget for 2002 includes revenues from oil

exploration leases in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- meaning the

White House assumes oil development in this pristine area will proceed.

Pressure from the oil industry to open up the Arctic Refuge to drilling

has never been stronger. The industry views this year as its best

opportunity to accomplish what it has tried for years to achieve.

To understand more or any questions, you may refer to the

following two sites:

http://www.capwiz.com/nwf/issues/alert/?alertid=18478

http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/rep/execsum.asp

Public opinion is already supportive of preventing Arctic oil

operations, and now the public must convince Congress to block

any effort to open the Arctic Refuge to oil exploration and development.

WHAT YOU CAN DO :

WE LISTED SOME KEY POINTS IN YOUR LETTER TO THE

CONGRESS, PRESIDENT and GOVERNMENT AGENCIES:

(NOTE: Please include all of the following websites in your letter.

They are important references for those decision makers too.)

REMEMBER : BE POLITE IN EVERY LETTER !!!

KEY POINTS :

1: Please oppose and stop any and all efforts to allow oil drilling

in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, whether as part of the

2002 budget, or as part of a comprehensive energy package.

(This point is your purpose of the entire letter. )

2: The 19.6-million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is among

the wildest, most pristine places in the United States.

The 1.5-million acres of its coastal plain being proposed for

oil exploration are the most biologically productive part of

the Refuge, and the heart of its wildlife activity.

A total of 135 bird species from four continents use the Refuge's

coastal plain. As many as 300,000 snow geese feed on the coastal

tundra in the fall before flying on to their wintering grounds. Northern

pintail ducks, mallards, red-throated loons, tundra swans and

white-fronted geese are among the many other migratory species

known to inhabit the Arctic coastal plain during the year.

More than 100 additional species of wildlife rely on the coastal plain

which is the central calving ground for the porcupine caribou herd,

the most important land denning habitat for polar bears in the

Alaskan Arctic, habitat for wolves and grizzly and brown bears,

and year-round home to muskoxen, arctic foxes and wolverines.

3: The available oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a drop

in the bucket of America's energy needs. The best U.S. Geological

Survey estimate is that less than a six-month supply of oil could be

economically recovered from the Arctic Refuge

(about 3.2 billion barrels, spread out over a 50-year period),

and that it would take at least 10 years of exploration, drilling and

pipeline construction before the oil would reach refineries.

The drilling would be far too little to risk damaging its royal

splendor. We can't afford to squander that wildlife and

wilderness for a short-term fix of oil.

4: What American needs is a Responsible Oil Policy :

Fuel Efficiency, Not Foolish Development of the Arctic National

Wildlife Refuge. To get the key points for a Responsible Oil Policy :

Please click : http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/rep/execsum.asp

Fuel efficiency improvements can deliver more oil, more quickly

and more cheaply than the Arctic Refuge.

5: Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would have no impact

on the price of energy. The oil market is global, and Arctic Refuge oil

would expand global oil reserves by just 0.3 percent -- a quantity far

too inconsequential to affect prices at the pump or elsewhere.

6: Drilling in the coastal plain would spoil an irreplaceable natural

treasure. Instead of wilderness, a new legacy would emerge of oil

derricks, roads, assorted vehicles, long pipelines connected by feeder

pipelines, power plants, oil processing facilities, gas injection plants,

loading docks, dormitories, airstrips, gravel pits, utility lines,

landfills, air pollution (particularly nitrogen oxides and methane,

a greenhouse gas), oil spills, drilling wastes and sewer sludge.

7: Please use all your power to oppose and stop all efforts to

allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, whether as

part of the 2002 budget, or as part of a comprehensive energy

package. The Arctic National Wildlife Refugee is for

thousands of the America's future generations forever.

We must all carefully protect and guard it in every generation.
