1: WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

AFTER ABC'S PRIME TIME SHOW

ON SAFARI CLUB KILLING MOST

ENDANGERED SPECIES :

-

" Wayne Pacelle "

Friday, April 20, 2001 8:38 PM

PLEASE :

a) Send your thanks to ABC News' Primetime for their

numerous recent reports on animal issues, (including

the Primetime story on trophy hunting and recent story

on cockfighting):

Leave a message of thanks for Primetime's Executive Producer

Bob Lang at

Tel: (212) 456-2020, OR send him a fax

Fax: (212) 456-6533,

OR E-mail through this web site:

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/primetime/2020/Primetime_email_form.html

b) Also send your note of appreciation to:

Victor Neufeld,

Executive Producer, ABC News

147 Columbus Avenue, 10th Floor

New York, NY 10023-5900

For ABC World News Tonight, please visit the following

web site to voice your support for their reporting on

cockfighting:

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/wnt/WorldNewsTonight/WNT_newemail_form.html

*** Note that the Safari Club is encouraging their

members and supporters to get in touch with ABC as

well. It would be very helpful for these ABC

executives to hear from those who support their

reporting on this important story.

c) Send a strong letter of disapproval to officials at

the Smithsonian Institution. Ask that they detach

themselves from Ken Behring's:

Smithsonian Institution

1000 Jefferson Drive SW

4th Floor

Washington, DC 20560-0043

Phone: (202) 357-1699 or (800) 931-3226

Fax: (202) 633-9816

E-mail: webmaster (@nmah.si.edu )

d) Please contact your United States Representative

and Senators and ask them to tell the U.S. Fish and

Wildlife Service to finalize the Service's proposed

rule to list all populations and subspecies of Argali

sheep as endangered under the Endangered Species Act

(three subspecies of the argali sheep are still listed

as being only threatened). This would stop the legal

importation of trophies from scores of Argalis killed

by American trophy hunters each year.

e) Also ask your U.S. Senators and Representative to

support legislation to ban " Canned Hunt " facilities in

the U.S. Although no bill numbers have been yet

assigned to the Canned Hunt bill this year, we expect

they will be introduced in Congress soon (stay tuned

to Humanelines and our website for news as the

legislation progresses).

Write to your Senator at:

The Honorable (full name)

U.S. Senate,

Washington, DC 20510.

AND

Write to your Representative at:

The Honorable (full name)

U.S. House of Representatives

Washington, DC 20515.

You can reach either your Senators or your

Representative by calling the Congressional

switchboard number, 202-224-3121

You can look up the names of your U.S. Senators and

Representative at: http://www.vote-smart.org

f) Spread the word! Let your friends and family know

about the kind of cruelties that the Safari Club and

the Smithsonian are involved in, and ask them to take

action to stop them as well!

Thanks again for your help and hard work in saving

animals. Every phone call and letter you make can

make a tremendous difference. Call us at 202/

955-3665 for more information on this issue.

=========================================

2: AWA ENFORCEMENT FUNDING : (from Huamanelines.)

Once again, we need your help to improve USDA's enforcement of Animal

Welfare Act requirements at puppy mills, laboratories, zoos, circuses,

airlines, and other facilities. Thanks to grassroots pressure, Congress

provided modest increases of $1 million in 1999 and $2 million in 2000 for

USDA's inspections program. But there are still far too few inspections

and follow-up prosecutions to ensure the safety and welfare of millions of

animals across the country. There are still only about 80 inspectors

responsible for checking approximately 10,000 facilities nationwide.

This year, please help us push for a $3.8 million increase in AWA

enforcement. This relatively small investment will make a real

difference for animals!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

Call your legislators (congressional switchboard: 202/ 225-3121) and

a) Urge your U.S. Representative to sign onto a group letter being

circulated in the House by Rep's. Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Dennis Kucinich

(D-OH), addressed to the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee,

which expresses support for a $3.8 million increase for

Animal Welfare Act enforcement in the next fiscal year.

b) Urge your two Senators to sign onto the same group letter being

circulated in the Senate by Sen's. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and John Kerry

(D-MA). Last year, 78 Rep's. and 9 Sen's. signed letters asking for

increased AWA funding. Let's do even better this year! This single issue

will affect thousands and thousands of animals.
