1: PA Horse Transport Bill HB 1139 Needs Calls right now !!

Equine Protection Network

equineprotectionnetwork.com

June 4, 2001

The Senate Agricultural & Rural Affairs Committee is

scheduled to consider PA HB 1139, the Horse Transport Bill

on Wednesday June 13, 2001.

There is more information on our website on this Action Alert.

Unless people let these Senators know how important this issue is, this

bill will continue to sit on the back burner. The EPN has been fighting

to ban double deck cattle trailers for horses in PA for 6 years, we are

so close. We need your calls & faxes to put an end to this inhumane

transport of horses!

PLEASE CALL NOW :

Senator Brightbill, Floor Leader

Harrisburg: PH: 717-787-5708

FAX: 717-787-3455 & 717-787-6040

Senator Jubelirer, the Pro Tempore of the Senate

Senator Waugh, Chairman of the Senate Agricultural & Rural Affairs

Committee PH:717-787-3817 Fax:717-783-1900

Senator Wenger, Vice Chairman of the Senate Agricultural & Rural Affairs

Committee PH: 717-787-4420 Fax:717-783-3156

with calls & faxes urging them to bring the Horse Transport Bill to a

vote NOW! before the Senate recesses for the summer!

Senator David Brightbill, Floor Leader

Senator Jeffrey Piccola, Majority Whip

Senator Mike Waugh, Chairman Senate Agricultural & Rural Affairs

Senator Noah Wenger, Vice Chairman Senate Agricultural & Rural Affairs

SAMPLE LETTER :

RE: PA Horse Transport Bill

Dear Senator,

I urge you to schedule PA HB 1139, the Horse

Transport Bill, for a vote in the PA Senate before the Senate recesses

for the summer. Allowing this bill to linger over the summer will cause

needless suffering for hundreds of horses that could easily be

prevented. I strongly urge you to vote YES on the

Horse Transport Bill.

This legislation will ban the use of double

deck trailers to transport horses in PA. These trailers are designed for

cattle and hogs, and do not meet horse industry standards for the

transport of horses. These trailers cause injury and even death to the

horses transported.

This legislation will not negatively impact the

horse industry in PA. Only a handful of out of state residents use these

trailers to transport horses. These trailers are not horse industry

standard.

Sincerely,

Your name

2: URGENT ALERT!!!

JUNE 13, 2001 (Wednesday) MEETING :

CONGRESSMAN CUNNINGHAM TO OFFER

AMENDMENT TO KILL IRRADIATION STUDY

We have just learned that Congressman Randy " Duke " Cunningham

(R-CA) is planning to offer an amendment to kill the study that

will focus on the harmful health effects of food irradiation that

Public Citizen was successful in adding to the 2002 Agriculture-

Food and Drug Administration Appropriations Bill. Cunningham is

from San Diego, the home of the Titan Corporation, one of the major

promoters of food irradiation. The full Appropriations Committee

will be meeting on June 13, 2001 to consider this bill.

Irradiation does nothing to remove the feces, urine, pus, vomit and

tumors often left on beef, chicken, and lamb as the result of filthy

and inhumane slaughterhouse conditions. These conditions have

worsened as conveyer belts have speeded up (400 cow carcasses

are processed per hour nowadays) and public oversight of

slaughterhouses has been reduced.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE GET AS MANY PHONE CALLS

AS POSSIBLE TO THE MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE

APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE TO KILL THE CUNNINGHAM

AMENDMENT. PLEASE CALL NOW TO URGE THEM TO

KILL THE CUNNINGHAM AMENDMENT AND LEAVE

THE " FOOD IRRADIATION STUDY " IN THE BILL.

======================================

SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT :

Hello, my name is _______________________. I am calling about

a section of the Agriculture-Food and Drug Administration Appropriations

Bill that is being considered today by the House Appropriations

Committee. At the present time, the bill contains a provision that

calls for a study to " test the safety of consuming irradiated foods. "

I have heard that there will be an attempt to remove that study from

the bill. I urge the Congressman/Congresswoman to OPPOSE the

effort to remove the study from the bill and to leave the funding for

that study in tact. Please OPPOSE the Cunningham Amendment.

Thank you very much.

3: BLOOD FLOWS ON THE CANADIAN ICE FLOES .

The image is gruesome: A harp seal struggling on the

ice, prone before the deadly blow of a hakapik that

shatters her skull and spills her blood. It's an image

that will be repeated 275,000 times off the east coast

of Canada, and inflame an ongoing debate about

cruelty, sustainability, cod stocks, and economics.

It's the Canadian commercial seal hunt, the largest

slaughter of marine mammals in the world.

In March, the International Fund for Animal Welfare

(IFAW) will once again be among the observers of the

seal hunt on the ice floes of the Gulf of St.

Lawrence. Witnesses will film and photograph the scene

and inspect the remains, consigned to the role of

coroner. Ironically, officers of the Canadian Coast

Guard-the official watchdog in this orchestrated

slaughter-will passively watch nearby as they provide

free ice-breaking services to the sealers. That's

because the seal hunt is subsidized by the Canadian

government. In December, the Department of Fisheries

and Oceans (DFO) announced that it would retain a seal

hunt quota of 275,000 animals despite the best

scientific evidence pointing toward an imperiled

population. A wealth of evidence, including a new

study to be published in the peer-reviewed scientific

journal Conservation Biology, indicates that Canada's

management plan for the Northwest Atlantic harp seal

is threatening the population's long-term stability.

The government's decision to ignore the best available

science has groups such as IFAW outraged. " The

government repeatedly promised to set the year 2000

quota based on the results of a census of the seal

population taken earlier this year, " said Rick Smith,

Ph.D., national director of IFAW-Canada. " Work on the

census was completed in March [1999]. Why have the

results not been made public? " The argument that seals

are impeding the recovery of fishery-diminished cod

stocks fails any scrutiny as a case for the seal hunt.

Besides a scientific consensus to the contrary, it is

overly simplistic to think that in a complex marine

ecosystem containing hundreds of species, the

reduction of harp seals would result in the increase

of cod. In fact, it might do more harm than good,

since harp seals also eat cod predators such as squid

and skates.

In 1999, many sealers discovered that the limited

market for seal oil and pelts could not support the

current seal quota levels. Pelt prices dropped by as

much as 50 percent, and sealers refused to return to

the ice because their already slim profit margins were

almost nonexistent.

With the seal market near collapse and many seals

killed solely for their genitalia for sale in Asian

markets, and when year after year sealers are

videotaped illegally skinning seals alive and killing

pups just days or weeks old, the time has come for the

Canadian government to stop the seal hunt.

Please write to the Canadian government demanding an

end to this useless, wasteful, and cruel hunt.

RE: PLASE STOP BLOODY SEAL SLAUGHTER.

Dear .........

I am writing to express my disgust at the continued slaughter of

seals in your country. Please Stop bloody Seal slaughter.

The harp seals struggling on the ice, prone before the deadly blow

of a hakapik that shatters her skull and spills her blood. It's an image

that will be repeated 275,000 times off the east coast of Canada

The Canadian commercial seal hunt is the largest slaughter of marine

mammals in the world.

The world has been repulsed by the sight of bloody bodies for

decades now, and it's time for Canada to enter the next millennium

with a more enlightened approach to commerce. The sealers can be

trained for other professions; this one is archaic and cruel.

I will strongly inform all of our members to consider boycotting

Canadian tourism and products until the seal slaughter stops

for good.

Stray Animals in Brazil!

Please forward it widely!

The stray animals of the city of Salvador in Brazil are the most

miserable and mistreated of the country. Witnesses said that animals are

kept in terrible conditions, abused and killed in such barbaric ways. A

witness saw a veterinarian spilling bleach on new born puppies, animals

being kicked and hit by the employees.

Last year 2602 animals were exterminated and only 123 rescued by their

owners. The problem is the fee that is too expensive for people who earn

with minimal wage. The Animal Control was charged for Cruelty to Animals

but the Major has no concerning about that. Everything is the same. We

need to make a lot of pressure in order to make him aware that animal

welfare is an important issue.

Please send letters to:

Prefeitura de Salvador

Mr. Antonio José Imbassahy da Silva

Palácio Tome de Souza

Praça Municipal s/n

Centro - Salvador, BA

CEP - 40020010

BRAZIL

EMAIL : prefeiturasalvador (@pms.ba.gov.br )

Sample letter :

Dear Major Imbassahy,

We are aware of the barbaric way that Animal Control

has been treating the stray animals in Salvador. Not only

Brazilian activists have reported cruelty to animals in your city.

Many tourists around the world have witnessed

animals being brutally captured on the street as well as

children crying for their beloved pets because they do not

have money to get them back.

Last year, we had the opportunity to read some news

translated to English , where was told that the Animal

Control was being prosecuted for cruelty. However,

in April 2001, we received bad news again about a dog

called Bob that was killed even having a guardian and had

received all its shots.

For the sake of Animals and the tourism in your city,

we ask you to follow the example of the City of Rio de

Janeiro, whose Major Mr. Cesar Maia has been legislating

and providing dignity to animals. Rio de Janeiro has

become a non-kill city, what is less expensive than

exterminating animals and more humane as well.

Animal cruelty is crime in your country . People

(and it doesn't matter where they are from) expect children to

grow up respecting all living creatures because this is the

first lesson towards respecting human beings. A great

nation is ethical towards humans and animals alike.

Public Health authorities have always used the risk of

disease transmission to humans as an excuse to justify the

indiscriminate extermination of animals. We ask you for

structural changes in the bodies responsible for the

capture of homeless animals.

Spaying and Neutering, educating people and creating a

bond between the City Hall and the groups for

protection os Animals is the fastest way to achieve a

compassionate solution. Once more, we can mention Rio

de Janeiro, that should be an example for all your country.

This message is being spread all over the world and we

ask all people who read it to tell their friends to skip

SALVADOR on their trips until animals and people can

receive the same ethical treatment.

I look forward to hear from you, Mr.Imbassahy
