Guest guest
URGENT, CARIBBEAN CAMPAIGN TO SAVE WHALES. July 18, 2001 The Ocean Warrior, flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, is sailing for the Eastern Caribbean today from its berth in Miami, Florida, with a volunteer crew as the International Whaling Commission prepares to meet in London on July 23rd, 2001(Monday). ( http://www.seashepherd.org/campaigns/caribbean/pr71201.html http://www.seashepherd.org/campaigns/caribbean/caribbean1.html ) Japan is using " fisheries aid " to bribe small Caribbean island nations to vote against whale protection measures at the International Whaling Commission. Cetacean kills have risen in tandem with commercial fishing operations. Ten years ago, the total annual kill for the cetacean harpoon hunts in St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Dominica was estimated at no more than 30 animals. By 1999, the St. Lucia hunt alone killed an estimated 65 whales and 96 dolphins. The same year, St. Lucia's commercial fisheries marked their sixth year of relentless expansion, with a 26% increase in landings over the year before. Cetacean kills have increased as St. Lucia has taken increasingly large chunks out of its declining fish stocks. In recent years, St. Vincent's and St. Lucia's small cetacean hunts have included pygmy sperm whales, pygmy killer whales, false killer whales, Fraser's dolphins, Risso's dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, rough-toothed dolphins, and Cuvier?s beaked whales. Before you send messages to the following Caribbean countries, please also send a brief message to : International Institute for Peace through Tourism. Email: summit (@iipt.org ) (also send to : conference , (@iipt.org ) africa (@iipt.org ) ) (Reference website: www.iipt.org ) Please urge them to advise the Caribbean countries stop taking the bribing from the Japanese government and its Whaling industry. Stop vote for the resumption of cruel commercial whaling in International Whaling Commission(IWC ) in favor of Japanese attempt. Tell them the Caribbean countries is depending on the Tourism , not killing whales and dolphins. Now, let's send a brief message to following all of the Caribbean countries government and its tourism office in Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines etc. : (The KEY POINTS and CONTACT INFORMATION are listed for each island country ) : KEY POINTS in your letter to them : - Stop selling your vote to Japan and selling out the whales at the IWC - Close the loophole in the SPAW protocol permitting local hunting of whales and dolphins - Replace local whale and dolphin hunts with Whale Watching business. -------------------- SAMPLE LETTER : (you are welcome to write your own letter. thanks.) Dear ....., Your government continues to allow the killing of the whales and dolphins that tourists come to see. The Whale Watching trip were confronted by your fishermen trying to harpoon the whales. Whalers in the islands of the Eastern Caribbean are killing whales and dolphins in numbers that amount to one of the largest officially recorded intentional cetacean kills in North and South America, according to the International Whaling Commission (IWC). In recent years, St. Vincent's and St. Lucia's small cetacean hunts have included pygmy sperm whales, pygmy killer whales, false killer whales, Fraser's dolphins, Risso's dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, rough-toothed dolphins, and Cuvier?s beaked whales. (see Reference # 1, # 3 ). We would like to request your government to : 1: Stop taking Japan's whale-killing bribes . Stop selling out the whales at the IWC(International Whaling Commission) Stop support Japan to vote for very cruel commercial whaling at IWC. 2: Close the loophole in the SPAW protocol permitting local hunting of whales and dolphins. Stop killing whales and dolphins. (see Reference #2). 3: Replace local whale and dolphin hunts with whale watching business. If your government continues to receive bribing from Japan and support Japanese bloody and cruel " Commercial Whaling " attempt at the IWC, I will absolutely not go to your country for tourism and will spend my money elsewhere. We will also advise all of our members, friends and relatives to stop going to your country for the tourism. However, if you stop supporting Japan in IWC meeting (International Whaling Commission) and vote against cruel commercial whaling, we will definitely volunteer to help to bring more tourists from our country to your country to enjoy the peaceful and beautiful whale and dolphin watching. Thanks for your understanding, compassion and action to save the whales and dolphins. Sincerely, Your Name(s), City, State Country.
