URGENT, ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGEE IS IN DANGER NOW.

Dear Caring friend ,

On July 17, 2001, House Republicans moved swiftly to transform

President Bush's energy plan into legislation as a committee for the

first time endorsed the White House plan to drill for oil in an

Arctic wildlife refuge.

Now, the Leaders in the House of Representatives plan to bring an energy

bill to a vote NEXT WEEK that would open the Arctic National Wildlife

Refuge and other pristine wilderness to oil and gas drilling, provide tens

of billions of dollars to the fossil fuel and nuclear industries, and

increase air pollution from coal-fired power plants.

PLEASE, Let's talk to the US House of Representatives today to

rescue our most important natural treasure before it is too late.

The KEY POINTS , and ALL OF THE CONTACT INFORMATION

are listed below .

You are welcome to write your own letter if you wish.

PLEASE do Not forget to place your Name, your Address, City, State, Zip

and " U.S. CONSTITUENT(S) " at the beginning and the end of the letter.

Thanks so much for your kindness, compassion and urgent help.

=================================================

KEY POINTS : (There are total 8 Key Points. )

(FROM : Your Name,

Your Address,

City, State, zip,

U.S. Constituent(s). )

SUBJECT: PLEASE OPPOSE OIL DRILLING IN

ARCTIC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGEE AND

OTHER PRISTINE WILDERNESS.

1: Please OPPOSE and STOP any and all efforts to allow oil drilling

in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and other pristine wilderness,

whether as part of the 2002 budget, or as part of a comprehensive

energy package.

(Note: This point is your most important purpose of the entire letter. )

2: The Bush energy plan makes the wrong choices by focusing on

more drilling, coal-burning and nuclear power. The plan will increase

carbon dioxide pollution, nuclear waste, and harm to public lands that

Americans treasure. There are quicker, cleaner, cheaper, and safer

energy solutions -- that will help us all save money and energy, and

cut down on pollution.

As a Constituent in this country, I am counting on you to support

three key amendments to the plan:

a: Please support the Boehlert-Markey amendment that will close

a loophole that allows light trucks and SUVs to guzzle gas and spew

more global-warming carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere.

b: Please vote for the Johnson-Markey-Boehlert Amendment to

strike the provision that would allow oil drilling in the Arctic National

Wildlife Refuge. 95 percent of the Arctic coastal plain is already open

to oil drilling. Let's keep the last FIVE PERCENT (5 %) wild and

beautiful for American's thousands of future generations to enjoy.

c: Please vote for an amendment to strike the controversial

public lands title that would weaken protections for public lands against

oil and gas drilling. This amendment would also provide 7.4 billion

dollars in " royalty relief " to the oil industry for deep water drilling.

We don't need to reward polluters any longer!

2: The 19.6-million acre Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is among

the wildest, most pristine places in the United States.

The 1.5-million acres of its coastal plain being proposed for

oil exploration are the most biologically productive part of

the Refuge, and the heart of its wildlife activity.

A total of 135 bird species from four continents use the Refuge's

coastal plain. As many as 300,000 snow geese feed on the coastal

tundra in the fall before flying on to their wintering grounds. Northern

pintail ducks, mallards, red-throated loons, tundra swans and

white-fronted geese are among the many other migratory species

known to inhabit the Arctic coastal plain during the year. More than

100 additional species of wildlife rely on the coastal plain which is

the central calving ground for the porcupine caribou herd, the most

important land denning habitat for polar bears in the Alaskan Arctic,

habitat for wolves and grizzly and brown bears, and year-round home

to muskoxen, arctic foxes and wolverines.

3: The available oil from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is a drop

in the bucket of America's energy needs. The best U.S. Geological

Survey estimate is that less than a six-month supply of oil could be

economically recovered from the Arctic Refuge

(about 3.2 billion barrels, spread out over a 50-year period),

and that it would take at least 10 years of exploration, drilling and

pipeline construction before the oil would reach refineries.

The drilling would be far too little to risk damaging its royal

splendor. We can't afford to squander that wildlife and

wilderness for a short-term fix of oil.

4: What American needs is a Responsible Oil Policy :

Fuel Efficiency, Not Foolish Development of the Arctic National

Wildlife Refuge. To get the key points for a Responsible Oil Policy :

Please click : http://www.nrdc.org/air/energy/rep/execsum.asp

5: Drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would have no impact

on the price of energy. The oil market is global, and Arctic Refuge oil

would expand global oil reserves by just 0.3 percent -- a quantity far

too inconsequential to affect prices at the pump or elsewhere.

6: Drilling in the coastal plain would spoil an irreplaceable natural

treasure. Instead of wilderness, a new legacy would emerge of oil

derricks, roads, assorted vehicles, long pipelines connected by feeder

pipelines, power plants, oil processing facilities, gas injection plants,

loading docks, dormitories, airstrips, gravel pits, utility lines,

landfills, air pollution (particularly nitrogen oxides and methane,

a greenhouse gas), oil spills, drilling wastes and sewer sludge.

7: Please use all your power to oppose and stop all efforts to

allow drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and

other pristine areas from drilling whether as part of the 2002 budget,

or as part of a comprehensive energy package.

The Arctic National Wildlife Refugee is for all of the

American's future thousands of generations to enjoy forever.
