URGENT,

STOP SUBSIDIZING THE FILTHY LIVESTOCK INDUSTRY.

Dear Caring friend,

The Washington Post published a very important article on

the subsidy to Livestock industry's pollution :

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A21924-2001Aug16.html

For Big Hog Farms, Big Subsidies

Taxpayers May Foot the Bill for Environmental Cleanup

Please let's send a Thank you note to Washingotn post on the

" Big Hog Farms, Big Subsidies " article . Please encourage

them to write more on the Factory farms and Slaughterhouses :.

Email : letters (@washpost.com )

Thanks to all of your efforts & comments to EPA on the CAFO issue.

Now, with the Environmental Protection Agency contemplating new and

potentially costly regulations governing livestock waste, lobbyists for

the pork, cattle and poultry industries have proposed that taxpayers help

foot the bill.

The US Senate will be back to vote on this issue soon . Please let's

write this very important letter to the Senate, President Bush and some

Cabinet members to stop subsidizing the filthy livestock industry

pollution. (* it just passed in the U.S. House.)

The SAMPLE LETTER and ALL OF THE CONTACT

INFORMATION enclosed below.

(SPECIAL ATTENTION : When you use BCC field when sending

your email, Please Do NOT use the same email address in

the FROM and TO fields. Recently, due to increasing virus,

Many ISP companies do not deliver if the FROM address

is the same as TO address. Or it may be Sent , but it never gets to the

destination ! Please be aware of this important alert . )

Thanks for your kindness and urgent help.

===========================================

SAMPLE LETTER : (you may write your own letter if you wish.)

Please place your Name , Address and Constituent at the

Beginning and the End of your letter.

Please enclose all of the References in your letters !

FROM: Your Name,

Your Address,

City, State, Zip.

U.S. Constituent.

SUBJECT : Please Stop Subsidizing the filthy Livestock Industry.

Dear Senator,

In light of the recent Washington Post article:

" For Big Hog Farms, Big Subsidies, Taxpayers May Foot the

Bill for Environmental Cleanup " , (see Reference # 1 )

We strongly request you please stop any bill that would lift the

cap on the size of livestock producers to be eligible for the subsidy

from USDA's " Environmental Quality Incentives Program " (EQIP)

for the environmental damage created by the livestock producers.

Please use your power to greatly reduce the skyrocketing subsidy

for all " meat and dairy " producing livestock industry producers .

There is no any other industry in the United States to get such special

treatment to have the Tax payers to pay for the industry's POLLUTION.

While the entire nation is going thru the economic hardship, the

House taking it easy to magnify the subsidy to the livestock industry's

pollution despite the public outcry . It would increase the overall

size of the EQIP program from $200 million to $1.2 billion per year.

Over the past decade, the food industry gave Congress over

$41 million in campaign contributions. More than a third of that money

went to members of Senate and House Agricultural Committees.

(see Reference # 2 ).

While the livestock industry(meat, dairy, poultry ) argue that they are

" Feeding the Country " , our reasons to request you to stop the subsidy

to the Live Stock industry can be viewed from different angles

in terms of : A: Human Health, B: The Environment,

C: The Animal Welfare :

A: The Human Health :

1.37 million in 1998, or 58%, of all U.S. deaths in 1998, were

attributed to diseases for which consumption of animal products

represents a substantial risk factor.

The principal risk factors for Heart diseases are high cholesterol

levels. Saturated fats raise cholesterol levels. They are found

predominately in animal products .

According to " Cancer Prevention Coalition " , Nitrites are widely

used as preservatives in hot dogs, besides other meat products.

Nitrites combine with amines naturally present in meat to form

carcinogenic and is associated with cancer of the oral cavity,

urinary bladder, esophagus, stomach and brain. There is substantial

evidence on the risks of childhood cancer from the consumption of

meats containing nitrites as well as the brain tumors in the offspring.

With the breast cancers so rampant in the United States particularly,

injections of Bovine Growth Hormone(rBGH) causes cows to

produce up to 20 percent more milk and a ten-fold increase in

IGF-1 levels in cows receiving the hormone. IGF-1 is not

destroyed by human digestion. IGF-1 maintains the malignancy

of human breast cancer cells, including their invasiveness and

ability to spread to distant organs.

For more detail , please review the References # 3 .

B: The Environmental impact of the US Livestock industry :

In U.S., " factory farms " generate more than 130 times the amount

of waste that people do. Pollution from livestock farms seriously

threatens humans, fish, and ecosystems. Animal waste contains

disease-causing pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli,

Cryptosporidium, and fecal coliform, which can be ten to 100 times

more concentrated than in human waste. More than 40 diseases

can be transferred to humans through manure. The nitrate levels

in groundwater surrounding the Hog farms' manure " lagoon "

(a giant disposal pit) are 18 times the legal limit.

For more detail, please review the References # 4

C: The Animal Welfare issue of the US livestock industry :

Over nine billion farm animals are killed in the United States each year.

The vast majority are raised in intensive-confinement systems

(factory farms), in which the greatest possible number of animals are

raised in the smallest possible space and at the lowest possible cost

to maximize productivity and profits. These animals are treated as mere

commodities rather than social, intelligent creatures who are capable of

great suffering and emotional stress. The traditional storybook farm,

where animals can interact and move freely in the barnyard and fields,

is virtually a thing of the past.

For example, in the year 2000, nearly 98 million hogs were slaughtered in

the United States, and the vast majority were raised in " HOG factories "

..

At such facilities, breeding sows spend most of their lives in a

" gestation crate " about two feet wide and similar to the size of the

back seat of a compact car. She can NOT turn around.

She is fed at one end of the crate, and her feces collects at the other.

She often frantically and repeatedly biting the metal bars. Against all

her natural instincts, she must give birth to piglets, nurse them, eat,

sleep, defecate, drink, stand and lie in the same cramped space.

The nursing period is cut drastically short by the premature

separation of the piglets from their mother. The sow is immediately

re-impregnated and then sent back to the " Gestation Crates " again !

This vicious cycle is repeated over and over again until the sow's

" productivity " wanes, and she is promptly dragged to slaughter !

Gestation crates are so cruel that they have been outlawed in other

countries, but tragically, they remain common in the United States.

Another example , the harsh conditions in veal factories result in severe

calf diseases. By depriving veal calves of their mother's milk, fresh

air, exercise, adequate nutrition, and proper veterinary care,

veal factories are a breeding ground for stress and infectious diseases.

Veal factories attempt to counter the effects of intensive confinement

by administering a wide array of antibiotics and other chemicals.

This " cost effective " practice represents a significant hazard to public

health.(please click photo : http://www.cok-online.org/abol/9/exhibit/ )

The unfortunate " food animals " (livestock) whose number is more than

90 % of all animals are completely, purposely excluded from the

Animals Welfare Act and all of the other animal cruelty law in the

country.(Federal and State.) The only law is " Humane Slaughter Act "

which is NOT even enforced . Billions of innocent animals are routinely

skinned alive, dismembered alive in the thousands of slaughterhouses.

For more detail, please review the References # 5 .

Again, please stop any bill that would lift the cap on the size of

livestock producers to be eligible for the subsidy from USDA's

" Environmental Quality Incentives Program " (EQIP) for the

environmental damage created by the livestock producers.

Please stop any subsidy to such unhealthy , public hazardous

" meat and dairy " livestock industry which kills millions Americans ,

damage the Environment, and relentless cruel to billions of animals

every year .

Thanks so much for your kindness and help.

Sincerely ,

Your Name,

Your Address,

U.S. CONSTITUENT.
