WAL-MART & TESCO - PLEASE CROSSPOST

A Project of The Humane Society of the United States and The Fund forAnimalshttp://www.humanelines.org/ ASK WAL-MART TO SEVER ITS TIES TO THE WHALING INDUSTRY:Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, has business ties that link it to the cruel international whaling and dolphin hunting business. By purchasing a 37% stake in the Japanese supermarket chain Seiyu, Ltd.-a key distributorof whale and dolphin products in Japan-Wal-Mart has been unwittingly supporting the slaughter of thousands of whales and dolphins every year. Asone of Japan's leading supermarket chains, Seiyu's sales of whale and dolphin meat have been key in maintaining the Japanese whale and dolphin hunting business, despite

worldwide opposition and an international ban oncommercial whaling. Whales killed by whaling ships can suffer prolonged agony, sometimes taking up to an hour to die after the initial grenadeharpoon explodes in their bodies. Dolphins killed in Japanese dolphin hunts fare no better; they are typically rounded up and driven by boats into theshore, where dolphin killers stab them with long knives or sever their spines to kill them. The recent 'dolphin drives' off the coast of Taiji,Japan earlier this year (see HUMANElines Issue 270<http://www.hsus.org/ace/19944> documented on film by activists, exemplified this cruelty graphically.WHAT YOU CAN DO:1. Contact

Wal-Mart's president and CEO and politely ask him to use Wal-Mart's considerable corporate influence to stop the sale of whale, dolphin and porpoise products in all stores owned and operated by Seiyu, Ltd. Let him know that as long as supermarkets in Japan continue to sellthese products, the Japanese incentive to continue the slaughter willremain.
