Dear Animal Friend,

The Sierra Club has launched a landmark campaign to ban leg-hold traps and snares on public lands in New Mexico. There are several methods used to trap animals in the wild. The most common is the steel-jaw leghold trap. Animals caught in a hidden steel jaw trap suffer a slow, excruciating death. The trap snaps down on the limb of an unsuspecting animal, sometimes breaking the limb. Many frantically chew off their own legs to escape the agonizing pain. The leghold trap is not just cruel; it is also indiscriminate. Trappers discard millions of "trash animals" not wanted for their fur, including domestic pets and endangered species. Trapped animals sometimes leave behind dependent young who are doomed to starvation, adding to the death toll for each coat. Because they are set on land and in water, snare traps are even more indiscriminate than leghold traps. Not only are they cheap and easy to set, but trappers often blanket a targeted area with dozens of snares in an attempt to

capture as many animals as possible. Companion animals, such as dogs and cats, have been trapped and killed after wandering into a trap. The Sierra Club contends that traps present a hazard not only to non-target animals, but also to hikers.

The Department of Game and Fish is currently accepting comments on its trapping regulations, and the Department and Game Commissioners need to hear from members of the public who are concerned. http://www.idausa.org/facts/furfacts.html to access IDA's fur factsheet to help you draft a letter.
