Henning Steinfeld, Chief of FAO's Livestock Information and Policy Branch: "Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems. Urgent action is required to remedy the situation."

Dean Ornish M.D., head of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, Calif.who has successfully used a vegetarian diet to reverse heart disease: "I don't understand why asking people to eat a well-balanced vegetarian diet is considered drastic, while it is medically conservative to cut people open or put them on powerful cholesterol-lowering drugs for the rest of their lives."

1. During the last months of 2006, the vegetarian way of life found a lot of appreciation in the international press and even by FAO. Some years ago there had been FAO talk of exporting the 'blessings' of technical ingenuity in agriculture also to developing countries (factory farming?) but now they finally admit a fact they never wanted to acknowledge before: 'LIVESTOCK IS A MAJOR THREAT TO ENVIRONMENT'. We can but hope that this late awakening of the UN agency will lead to a long overdue serious and objective research of the benefits of vegetarianism.

2. To make matters worse, the FAO and national agencies are also informing about poor harvests, a huge percentage of which is fed to animals (example: up to 95 percent of soy is used as fodder). Will the dangerous combination of ecological damage through animal husbandry and failing harvests now finally (better late then never!) get official attention and, hopefully, stop the present meat-pushing policies?
