for our upcoming Jewish Singles lunch parties.

 

The first will be on Sunday June 10th, 2007 c.e. at 12 Noon in

Parsippany, New Jersey.

 

The second will be on Sunday June 17th, 2007 c.e. at 12 Noon in

Parsippany, New Jersey. These ARE Jewish Singles events for Jewish

singles.

We do not charge any fees for attending any of our

we are trying to create a veggie world.

That means of course getting more people to become aware of the need

to go veggie.

And what about the veggies who are out there already?

 

Well I want to tell you a personal story about that. My late father

was a veggie when he was younger, but he married a carnivore. As a

result I was raised as a carnivore, though I can recall my late

father eating vegetable plates at diners we would go to so he could

get them and eating vegetarian Chinese food at Chinese restuarants

we would go to so he could get that food. At long last he finally

gave up and ended his vegetarianism.

 

Though he live to what some consider to be " a ripe old age " I am

convinced that had he remained a veggie he would still be alive. He

has been dead for some years now.

 

What all of that means of course is that we need to make sure that

veggies marry veggies and that they raise their children as veggies.

 

So the need for single veggie organizations is enormous.

It was certainly good fortune that I became a veggie myself quite

awhile ago but many children of these so-called " veg/carnivore "

or " mixed-marriages " are not quite so lucky and end up as non-

veggies.

 

I am also of course promoting the veggie way of life to others who

are not yet veggies.

 

One key group to promote the veggie way of life to is science

fiction fans. Why science fiction fans? Well because some science

fiction fans actually become science fiction writers.

 

Why science fiction writers then? Well because the way of life that

we take for granted here in the so-called " first world " , of

industrialized nations is a way of life that not so long ago

was considered to be science fiction. It was a science fiction

writer: Arthur C. Clarke, who

came up with the idea of communications satellites as a science

fiction idea.

 

Well they are fiction no more. Nor are communications devices that

do not require wires.

Remember the " communicators " on StarTrek? Chances are you have a

cell phone in your pocket or in your car, or if you don't you know

more than one person who does.

 

Once again, fiction no more. Fact.

 

The science fiction fan of today is the science fiction writer of

tomorrow.

 

The science fiction story or idea of today is the fact of tomorrow,

just as yesterday's science fiction stories and ideas are the facts

of today.

 

Another place I am helping to promote the veggie way of life is in

the Jewish community.

I happen to be Jewish and would want nothing but the best way of

life there is for my fellow Jews. Eating animals is not only not

good for the animals who are murdered for food, it is not good for

the humans who eat them.

 

Being veggie is also very much in the interests of the Jewish

community around the world.

Producing a pound of steak " protein " on the plate requires up to 21

pounds of so-called

" feed " protein from things like the 42% of American wheat

production, the 86% of American corn, oats and barley production,

the 90% of non-exported soybean production, that goes into the

creation of that pound of steak " protein " on the plate of the

American animal eater.

 

Producing all of that so-called " feed " requires a lot of energy.

More energy is used

as petro-chemical based fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, etc.

as well as in the transportation of that so-called " feed " , and of

the animals themselves, in the disposal of their wastes, in the

movement of water to irrigate those crops and to " water " those

animals.

 

Many of the energy sources involved are nations around the world

that supply arms to terrorists who slaughter Jews in Israel and

around the world, as well as other innocents, such as those who were

slaughtered on September 11th. 2001.

 

So I am promoting Jewish singles events at veggie establishments to

bring the fact of being able to have a veggie meal as a reality to

my fellow Jews.

 

I do so periodically at Veggie Heaven, a Kosher Vegan Chinese

Restaurant with several locations here in New Jersey. I hope that

similar restaurants exist elsewhere that may serve as event

locations. Failing that I hope that vegan house parties can be

arranged everywhere.

 

If you are Jewish yourself I hope that you will do the same wherever

you may be.

If you are able to come to some of these events I hope that you will

do so.

 

If you live to far away to get to them by all means create them.

Create them for your fellow Jews if you are Jewish.

 

Create them for your fellow veggies if you are veggie.

 

Create them for science fiction fans if you want to see science

fiction fans become veggie and science fiction ideas created by

veggie science fiction writers, all of whom start off as science

fiction fans creating the new facts of life on earth as ones which

will make it possible for a veggie world to in fact come into being.

Our Jewish singles groups are designed to increase the Jewish

population by

bringing single Jews together in the hope that marriages, and

children who will be raised

as Jews ,will result from bringing single Jews together.

We cannot ignore the real threat to Jewish survival posed by

intermarriage, which usually

results in the children of such marriages being raised as non-Jews.

Another real threat to Jewish survival in these times is the fact

that

in these times for one reason or another some people are no longer

heterosexual.

Any Jew who is no longer heterosexual is of course much less likely

to marry a Jew of the opposite sex and to have children with that

person.

We need every single Jew who can do so to marry another single Jew

and to have children as a result of those marriages who will be

raised as Jews.

Although it is possible to enter the mall from the Franklin Turnpike,

FROM ROUTE 17 SOUTHBOUND:

The entrance to the Interstate Shopping Center is from

Route 17 South, shortly past the Spring Street Exit and just

before the Franklin Turnpike overpass. It is about three miles

south of the junction of Routes 17 and 287, just past the Best

Western and the Howard Johnson.

 

FROM ROUTE 17 NORTHBOUND:

 

Travel north on Route 17 and make a U-Turn at the

Spring Street Exit in Ramsey, New Jersey. This is about ½ mile

past the Franklin Turnpike Exit and about 3-1/2 miles past the

Allendale Road Exit most of you take to our normal meeting site

in Upper Saddle River. Follow directions from Route 17

Southbound.

 

FROM THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY NORTHBOUND:

Take Exit 163 which is about 2-3/4 miles after the toll

plaza. This is a left lane exit and puts you onto Route 17

North. Follow directions for northbound 17 above. You will be

on Route 17 for a little more than 10-1/4 miles before you hit

the Spring Street exit.

 

FROM ROUTE 287 IN NEW YORK:

Follow the signs for Route 17 South, Mahwah, New

Jersey. This is a left lane exit, so be sure to get into one of

the two leftmost lanes. Follow the directions from Route 17

Southbound.

 

 

FROM ROUTE 287 IN NEW JERSEY:

This is an awkward interchange. Follow the signs for

Route 17 South and Mahwah, New Jersey. The exit will put you

onto a long ramp that makes a " U " and deposits you on 287 heading

the opposite way. Get into the left hand lanes and follow the

signs for Route 17 South. Follow the directions listed above for

Route 17 Southbound.

bookstores in the area. There are special circumstances regarding

each of these meetings.

................This meeting will be held at Borders Books in the

Interstate Shopping Mall on Route 17 South in Ramsey, New Jersey.

The Ice Nine discussion will be held at 7:00 PM. The main event will

begin at 8:00 PM. Due to store policies, we will collect no dues at

the meeting, however anyone who would pay dues at a regular meeting

is responsible for remitting them at the next meeting they attend.

July 14, 2007

................This meeting will be held at Bennett Books in Wyckoff,

New Jersey. NOTE THAT THIS MEETING WILL BE HELD EARLIER IN THE DAY!

The Association will have the use of the store from 4:00 PM until

8:00 PM. The Ice Nine discussion will be held at 4:00 PM. The

general meeting will begin at 5:00 PM. Standard (and owed) dues will

be collected.

................Bennett Books normally closes at 6:00 PM on

Saturdays. Staying open until 10:00 PM for our group proved too much

a strain on John and Betty Bennett, which is why we shifted last

year's meetings to their late night, Friday. We believe that

starting a couple of hours earlier than usual on a Saturday works

better for most people than moving to an entirely different night.

c-span, also known as C-SPAN provides much valuable information.

However, we are

distressed that programs like

Washington Journal on c-span seem to provide a forum for

anti-Semites and enemies of Israel and the Jewish people in

general who seem to not only call into that t.v. show, but get

through, and get

on the air, where they are seldom interupted or cut off by the show's

moderators. We feel that a 2 minute delay could enable the show's

moderators to

screen out the anti-Semites and enemies of Israel and the Jewish

people, however

no such 2 minute delay seems to be in place. Moreover the moderators

of that

show and others do not seem to be of a mind to cut off the anti-

Semites and

other enemies of Israel and the Jewish people in general who

regularly call into

that show and others

on c-span. We have therefore created this in the hopes

that members

of the group will become regular viewers of c-span and will call in

regularly to

Washington Journal and other c-span call in t.v. shows, to support

Israel and

the Jewish people and to counter the anti-Semites and other enemies

of Israel

and the Jewish people whose calls are regularly aired on c-span. We

also hope

that members of our will contact their U.S.

Senators and members of Congress and President Bush at

http://www.whitehouse.gov to see what can be done about

the situation at c-span.

There are many avenues for Jewish activism. Support of Israel,

Support of the Jewish people, Opposition to anti-Semitism, to name a

few.

We believe that it is vital for Jewish survival that single Jews

meet other single Jews, marry one another, and raise their children

as Jews. Because there is a hole in our calendar from Friday night

to Saturday night during which many single Jews go to non-Jewish

singles events, meet non-Jews, marry non-Jews, and have children

from those marriages who are not raised as Jews, the Jewish people

faces a very severe problem. We urge everyone who reads this to

contact his or her Rabbi and demand that his or her Rabbi hold

regular Jewish singles Onegs on Friday nights.

We feel that it is vitally important that single Jews go to Jewish

singles events and meet other Jewish singles at those events.

If you know anyone who happens to be Jewish who is hosting a

singles event please ask him or her to consider hosting events just

for Jewish singles.

We also offer the opportunity at our on line Jewish singles groups

to post your Jewish singles introductions and to respond to other

Jewish singles introductions.

children's magazines in New York City. She lives with her husband,

poet and playwright Cornelius Eady, in Washington, DC, where she is

writing the second book of the Firethorn trilogy. "

" How did you become a writer?

 

Very slowly. When I was a teenager, I set out to be a Writer with a

capital W. I saved money and went to live by myself for a winter in a

house on a highway, 10 miles from the nearest town, and doggedly

wrote five hours a day until I had finished a very bad science

fiction novel. I didn't know about revision in those days. I took

creative writing classes in college, which convinced me writing

wasn't my destiny. A decade later, I began thinking about Firethorn --

first the character, then her world. I did it as a hobby. I'd make a

few notes on the subway on my way to work or at night before I fell

asleep, and I started to research, reading non-fiction for the first

time in years. This woke up a certain part of my brain. A couple of

years later, I began to write the story down on vacations. I didn't

tell anyone but my husband, because I'd made such a big deal about

being a Writer before, and I didn't want anyone to ask how the book

was going. And sure enough, I gave it up at about 70 pages. I might

never have started again, and certainly wouldn't have finished, if I

hadn't taken a wonderful class with a writer called Abigail Thomas.

She held it in her apartment on Tuesday nights, and we called

ourselves the Tuesday Night Babes. It took me five years to write and

rewrite Firethorn after starting the class.

Some people say you are from a new breed of fantasy writers. Would

you agree?

 

There are great fantasy writers of all sorts out there. I think

people underestimate the genre. It can be just as speculative as

science fiction, but its speculations tend to be about societies, or

how history might look if it had been tweaked a bit. For my part, I

chose to write what I'd call a low fantasy rather than a high one,

from the point of view of a powerless and disreputable woman rather

than one of the movers and shakers, the kings and queens and warriors

and wizards, of society.

I remember seeing a wonderful tapestry at an exhibition at the

Metropolitan Museum of Art a couple of years ago, showing a huge

scene of an attack on a town, and people fleeing from the army

encampment toward the viewer. One well-dressed woman, a camp

follower, had a little lap dog in her arms. I was working on

Firethorn at the time and I was struck by how rarely we see

depictions of such women, in art or literature. I wanted the surprise

of having an insignificant background figure thrust into the

foreground.

 

Why did it have to be fantasy?

 

First, because I love to read fantasy. And also because it's good

way to write about all sorts of things that interest me, such as

love, violence, and magic. In historical novels, it's vital to be

accurate in the details, but in fantasy, there's latitude to choose

or invent details to fit the story you want to tell. But you want the

sights, sounds, and smells to seem absolutely real. I was aiming for

realism within the context of my imaginary world.

So tell us about love.

 

It surprised me that the book turned out to be so romantic. When I

started, Sire Galan was just a way for Firethorn to get out of her

village. And then Galan misbehaved and I thought he was a jerk,

although an attractive one. But he became more interesting to me as I

tried to figure out what he was doing and thinking..... "

...........Summer' s here, so the Science Fiction Association of

Bergen

County goes into its annual beat-the-heat mode by moving the club's

general meeting to Borders Books & Music in Ramsey, New Jersey on

Saturday, June 9, 2007. The store is at 235 Route 17 South,

Interstate Shopping Mall, junction of Route 17 and Franklin

Turnpike, Ramsey, New Jersey (201) 767 - 1967. We have held a

summertime meeting at this store for the past several years.

Directions appear on page two.

...........There will be several changes of the meeting format for

this month. The Ice Nine discussion will begin at 7:00 PM instead

of 6:30 PM. The Animation Associates videos will not be shown. We

will serve no refreshments (although they are available for purchase

in the store's café). No attendance fees or membership renewals

will be collected; they can be paid at the next S F A B C function.

PRE MEETING ACTIVITIES:

...........Early arrivals are invited to share their latest

discoveries of cool stuff-books, movies, TV, comics, etc–at the Ice

Nine discussion at the store at 7:00 PM.

FANTASY WRITER SARAH MICKLEM:

...........Sarah Micklem is the author of FIRETHORN, the first book in

a gritty epic fantasy trilogy about a young woman gifted with

uncanny abilities ..., gifts which are both a blessing and a

curse. The author has also been a teacher, an art director, and a

A NOTE ON SUMMER BOOKSTORE MEETINGS:

...........The Association does not meet in Upper Saddle River during

the summer (June, July, August) months. Summer meetings will be

held on the second Saturday during these months, but at different

times, in different venues, and under different guidelines than

normal.

...........The June meeting will be held at Borders Books in Ramsey,

New Jersey. Details appear above. Although we will not physically

collect Attendance and Membership Fees at this meeting, they are

still in effect and should be paid at the next opportunity.

...........The July and August meetings will be held at Bennett Books

in Wyckoff, New Jersey. THESE MEETINGS WILL RUN FROM 4:00 PM TO

at the east end of the Interstate Shopping Center. Although it is

possible to enter the mall from the Franklin Turnpike, we recommend

the Route 17 approach. Borders abuts Route 17 South.

FROM ROUTE 17 SOUTHBOUND:

...........The entrance to the Interstate Shopping Center is from

Route 17 South, shortly past the Spring Street Exit and just before

the Franklin Turnpike overpass. It is about three miles south of the

junction of Routes 17 and 287, just past the Best Western and Howard

Johnson.

FROM ROUTE 17 NORTHBOUND:

...........Travel north on Route 17 and make a U-Turn at the Spring

Street Exit in Ramsey, New Jersey. This is about 1/2 mile past the

Franklin Turnpike Exit and about 3-1/2 miles past the Allendale Road

Exit most of you take to our meeting site in Upper Saddle River.

Follow the directions from Route 17 Southbound.

FROM THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY NORTHBOUND:

...........Take Exit 163 which is about 2-3/4 miles after the toll

plaza. This is a left lane exit and puts you onto Route 17 North.

Follow directions for northbound 17 above. You will be on Route 17

for a little more than 10-1/4 miles before you hit the Spring Street

Exit.

FROM ROUTE 287 IN NEW YORK:

...........Follow the signs for Route 17 South, Mahwah, New Jersey.

This is a left lane exit, so be sure to get into one of the two

leftmost lanes. Follow the directions from Route 17 Southbound.

FROM ROUTE 287 IN NEW JERSEY:

...........This is an awkward interchange. Follow the signs for Route

17 South and Mahwah, New Jersey. The exit will put you onto a long

ramp that makes a " U " and deposits you on 287 heading the opposite

way. Get into the left hand lanes and follow the signs for Route 17

South. Follow the directions listed above for Route 17 Southbound.

FROM ROCKLAND COUNTY VIA LOCAL ROADS:

...........Travel Route 59 to its western terminus in Suffern, New

York. Turn left and proceed south along Orange Avenue. Orange

Avenue becomes the Franklin Turnpike when it crosses into New

Jersey. Continue south until you cross Route 17. Turn right at the

first traffic light after the highway. This is the Interstate Mall.

Turn right at the front of Shop-Rite and continue in the direction

of Route 17. Borders is the last store before the highway.

FROM BERGEN COUNTY VIA LOCAL ROADS:

...........Proceed north on the Franklin Turnpike and turn left into

the Interstate Mall in Ramsey, New Jersey.
