It seems like the new veterinarian over there, Dr. Jose Pla, would rather KILL animals than give them a chance that they deserve to be rescued or adopted. Although he reportedly promised a high quality of care when he was bidding for the lucrative six figure 40-hour per week contract, staff and volunteers at the shelter feel that he seems more interested in killing perfectly good animals than helping them. Here is some information from a reliable source on what is going on: http://forums.petfinder.com/viewtopic.php?p=1403841#1403841 It appears that the County is buying in on this philosophy, and that they are in the process of implementing new policies to support it. As a result of this, volunteers and staff are trying desperately to get animals our of the shelter before they are killed for simply being there too long or for being characterized as being "un-adoptable" by Dr. Pla. One trusted source told me that they are even considering animals with simple treatable conditions like mange as un-adoptable, making them candidates for euthanasia as well. All of this while the shelter has capacity, time, and resources to work with these animals. Here is a flyer that was put together this week in an attempt to try and save 24 dogs and cats that are potentially GOING TO BE KILLED TODAY: http://home.att.net/~kcboyle/BCASFlyer0607.jpg Look into their eyes and ask yourself if they deserve to die for no good reason other than the fact that they are homeless and patiently waiting for a new home. Here is what you can do to help: 1. Please consider rescuing or adopting one of these pets. Please contact the shelter immediately if you can help. The phone number is (201) 229-4600. 2. Please forward this to anyone you know that you think might be interested in adopting or able to rescue or foster. 3. Please contact the County officials and ask them not to put these unreasonable policies in place. Explain to them how a humane shelter should work, and ask for their support to make their County shelter a valuable and respected community asset and not simply a holding facility for homeless animals.
