Colleen Kessler of Peace Love & Pets and Kate Danaher are Bay Area Animal Advocates working with Jane Garrison to try to coordinate supplies into Lebanon and Israel to help the animal victims of war there.

Companion animals left from the evacuations.

Illegal Exotics needing safe refuge.

Zoo animals stressed from the bombing.

We need CONTACTS...

-anyone familiar with export/import out of Lebanon.

-supplies that can be purchased in Mediterranean countries and shipped through

either Port of Monaca in Cyprus, the airport in Brindisi, Italy or any transport out of Jordan.

- any FAMILY or FRIENDS that live in the areas (below) that can help and speak the native language as well as English.

- we are trying to gather supplies in any of these countries -

Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Cyprus, Italy, Greece, Syria, or Turkey.

Please note, we DO NOT need to gather supplies in the US right now..

it is too difficult to get them there and it is best and more cost effective to purchase (or have DONATED) the items closer to the region.

Please read below and familiarize yourself with the situation, share this alert with others for more help and CONTACT us with ANY contacts or assistance.

Time is against the animals!

Lebanon

The animal rescuers are having a more difficult time; supply lines have been cut off and getting any aid into the country - especially for the animals- it's low on the priorities. Thousands of them abandoned by evacuees who are being told by their governments to leave their pets behind. There’s one main rescue group in Lebanon – Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or BETA (no relation to the U.S. group PETA) – and they’re hanging on by a thread. Their shelter was hit, but they’ve managed to evacuate the dogs from there to a place in the hills, donated by a German supporter.

TODAY's dispatch from Lebanon

from Jane Garrison

8/9/06

1. Yesterday 2 baboons and a hyena were rescued from a pet store in the

south of Lebanon (see attached photo). Sadly, it is believed that the hyena

was poisoned by the pet store owner as he was dead 30 mins after they

rescued him. This is so sad as he lived in a tiny cage for three years (with

barely enough room to even lay down) and was so close to finally getting

some sense of love and freedom. A temporary larger cage is being built for

the baboons to keep them in until we can get them out of Lebanon and to a

sanctuary. Please help BETA (Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals)

with the cost of building the cage by making a donation on their web site

http://beta.beirut.com.

2. There are a few other primates (including a baby chimp) who BETA will try

to rescue today. All of these primates have been imported into Lebanon

illegally, are being kept in horrific conditions but due to the war nothing

will be done about it.

3. Due to the logistical challenges, we will not be able to get the rescued

dogs and cats out of Lebanon. For now they will have to stay at the shelter

that was created at the abandoned pig farm in the mountains above Beirut.

Calls/letters are still needed to Ahmed Fatfat to stop the threat of

shooting the dogs.

4. It has been extremely difficult to coordinate getting animal supplies

into Lebanon. At this point it is best to give financial donations to BETA

so they can stock pile what they need. If you have any contacts in Turkey or

Italy please contact me as we may be able to get supplies into Lebanon via

those countries.

More later...

CHAI/Hakol CHAI Saves Animals In The Line Of Fire

4 TONS OF FOOD, HUNDREDS OF WATER CONTAINERS SENT TO NORTHERN ISRAEL

SOURCE: CHAI <chai_us <chai_us >, http://www.chai-online.org/ <http://www.chai-online.org/>

July 27, Tel Aviv – Working through the night to avoid the danger of rocket

fire, Hakol Chai, the Israeli sister charity of Concern for Helping Animals

in Israel (CHAI), http://www.chai-online.org, <http://www.chai-online.org,> rushed 4 tons of food and

hundreds of plastic water containers to the northern Israeli settlement of

Nes Amim, near Nahariya, where volunteers immediately began the process of

distributing it to animals in need throughout the region.

While terrified residents in the north remain prisoners in their homes,

another kind of humanitarian disaster is taking place on the streets.

Starving and dehydrated cats and dogs, some injured, many lost, are running

in panic from the explosions of rockets. Some residents left their cats and

dogs behind when they evacuated, believing they would return soon. In other

cases, animals fled the sound of missiles, became disoriented, and lost

their way. Without food and water, they are desperate for help.

This dog got some shrapnel in his jaw from a bomb, but he was taken to a vet and is fine.
