*The Extreme Veg Event (EVE)*

You are invited to join the inaugural Bay Area Vegetarians EVE. Sunday,

January 7th, noon.

Official RSVP: http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.htm?EID=1509#1509

<http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.htm?EID=1509#1509>

Meet at the Martin Luther King, Jr memorial

<http://www.yerbabuenagardens.com/features/gardens.html#2> at Yerba

Buena Gardens <http://www.yerbabuenagardens.com/>, near 4th and Mission

(the MLK fountain is on the lower level of the outdoor park, Southeast

of the Metreon, and that's the only clue I'll give you) (it's not

actually tricky to find) (and I'll give you my cell phone when you RSVP

so don't worry if you don't find it).

Dress code: Black and white (see Rules for more details)

We'll walk from there to Bernal Heights, leafleting as we go. Lunch

break around 1:00 at Mariachi's for yummy vegan Mexican food. We need

to do some reconnaissance work here, to investigate which burrito and

which salsa are the best options, and then publicize our findings to

the veg community. (Click here

<http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=239%3E> to read more in the

Ultimate Guide).

We'll end around 3:00 at Maggie Mudd

<http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=126> in Bernal Heights to

feast on

vegan ice cream and join in the BAV Book Discussion on _Dominion_ if

you're interested. It's a darn good book (the Coffee Island Jitters ice

cream is better than the book though).

**NOTE: Mariachi's has veg and non-veg food, but our group will only be

ordering the vegan items. If you don't have time for the lunch ( or ice

cream ), then just join us for the leafleting. If you can't make the

leafleting, we'll be doing this another time, so maybe you can join us

then (stay tuned to SFBAVEG/SFBAVEG-EVENTS mailing list

<http://www.bayareaveg.org/lists.htm> or just check

back on the event calendar)

After Maggie Mudd's, you can return on foot, or take the Muni J Line

<http://511.org/> back to Powell and Market.

EVE level: 1.9 (no hills and two food stops erase the fact that we'll be

walking over 5 miles)

__EVE Rules and Goals__

_Rules: _

1. You must bring cash (for public transit and meals), bottle of water,

vegan snack if you think you'll need it. Each EVE will involve at least

one stop at a caffeine-serving establishment.

2. You must make an honest attempt to conform to the EVE dress code,

which will be different every time.

(First EVE will be all black with a splash of white, in honor of Myshkin.)

3. You must show up on time.

4. You must be able to walk for two-three hours. EVE's will vary between

Levels 1, 2, or 3 (3 being most difficult, which means lots of hills).

5. Absolutely no fur is allowed, real (of course!) or faux (I don't even

want to be reminded of it).

6. The person who hands out the most pieces of literature will get a

free dessert at dinner that the rest of the group will chip in and pay

for, so you must be willing to either eat dessert or help pay for

someone else's!

7. You must wear good walking shoes/boots. Vegan shoe rule: If your

current walking shoes are leather, you may wear them until they need to

be replaced. But if and when you buy new walking shoes for EVE's, you

must buy vegan ones.

8. You do not have to be vegan or even vegetarian to join an EVE.

However, you must be willing to eat only vegan foods for the duration of

the event, and you must be open to the idea of compassion towards

animals and vegan diets. If you are considering switching to a veg*n

diet, these events will be a great way for you to try some of the best

vegan foods in the Bay Area as well as ask questions of long-time veg*ns.

9. You must be willing to leaflet. You don't have to do much, especially

if you are brand new at this. See the #1 goal for EVE's. Even if you

only hand out 5 VSK's--that's five more people aware of how animals are

killed for food. The reason behind this rule is here:

_http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=free_me_

If you've never handed out a piece of literature before, you can watch

the veterans for the first hour and then practice. Remember, the worst

that can happen is that someone says " No. " You won't get thrown in jail.

You won't be physically attacked or hurt. You won't be ridiculed. You

have /nothing /to lose by offering a stranger veg information, but

animals have /everything/ to lose if you don't.

You can bring your own literature, but I will have lots. EVE events

focus on Veg Outreach. However, I will be approaching any and all people

wearing fur that we see. You may join in or not, fur leafleting is

optional.

10. You must have a sense of humor, be willing to put with occasional

sarcastic comments, and be open to and accepting towards all your EVEmates.

_Goals: _

1. To make as many new veg or veg-friendly people as we can, in three

hours.

2. To explore and appreciate our beautiful city.

3. To burn calories so we can eat a lot at dinner.

4. To give people a positive impression of veg activists.

5. To practice and improve our outreach skills, and to carefully study

different outreach tactics.

_IF YOU'RE NEW AT LEAFLETING:_

1. Show up 10 minutes early for a practice session.

2. Read the following essays before leafleting:

http://www.veganoutreach.org/advocacy/index.html

3. The night before the event, spend 10 minutes in front of a mirror

practicing your smile techniques. That's really all you need.

I'll be checking RSVP's up to Sunday morning, we have a GREAT group so far!
