Guest guest
OK, so, the next time you see a leafleting event posted by Sue Rattenbury--go! Last night I met Sue at Justin Herman Plaza, across from the Ferry Building, and the city was gorgeous. She led us over to a little park just North of the water sculpture, and there we saw--I'm not making this up--the Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill! Every evening they fly down to this park for the night! There were hundreds, brilliant green, and they had some human friends that they obviously see every evening. It was so cool. Everyone around the gathering was in a good mood, watching the birds, so it was easy to hand out a few Veg Starter Kits (VSK's). Then we slowly walked up Market, leafleting as we went. Great response. Gave away 250 in an hour, and we could have done more but we were forced to stop a few times to discuss important things like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, good veg restaurants, and various fabulous outfits walking by. It didn't feel like leafleting because we were laughing so much. A few highlights: 1. I handed out a bunch to a long line of people waiting for the bus. Five minutes later the bus drove right by me, and I saw three people on it reading a Veg Starter Kit! 2. At least 6 times we offered someone a flier, they glanced and said no, but then just as we were turning away they would turn back and say, " You know what, actually, I DO want that. Thank you. " 3. Twice I had people come up to me to ask for a flier, before I had a chance to approach them. 4. I gave away my last VSK 3.5 minutes before Sue did hers. 5. The VSK suitcase on wheels was taken. You wonder why that's in the highlights. Well, it was empty, so we didn't lose any VSK's. We're pretty sure a homeless person took it (who needs it more than we do). It meant that I was that much less of a dork at the art show later (not lugging a suitcase), and finally, it will finally make me arrange to take Rachel up on her offer of a pushcart for the leaflets. Thank you, Rachel! We ended up at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design, where they were having an opening reception for a show of glass work. Glass art? I'm not an artist, so I don't know what to call it, but it was: 1. GORGEOUS 2. Full of amazingly fascinating people who were just as interesting as the art to look at 3. Free 4. Something I never would have done on my own, thank you Sue for arranging! 5. Nice that they served free champagne (really) 6. A chance to see the most beautiful thing ever, a huge piece of art by David Ruth: http://www.davidruth.com/newprojects.html He was not the only artist there and I apologize to the others. But David Ruth--I love you. After that we stopped by the Hotel Monaco because the lobby is so pretty and the restrooms are clean, then ate a delish vegan dinner at Golden Era. The evening cost $11.50 (dinner plus bus fare), was vastly entertaining, full of laughter, and somehow we actually handed out 250 leaflets which means there are more vegetarians today then there were yesterday. Thanks Sue! Alex
