Hi there,

I recently moved and I have a new corner cafe to get to know. To get to

know very well--I drink a lot of coffee and I'm a good customer. So I

go down there the other day, cup in hand, and I see " vegan " something or

other in the bakery case. I get excited and I tell them that if I had

known they carried vegan stuff I would have purchased it by now, I

hadn't noticed it before. I thanked them for carrying vegan options.

The counter guy, who is also the manager or perhaps even the owner, then

/wrinkles his nose/ and (I'm not making this up) says, " Ooh, yuck. I

don't think those muffins are vegan. I don't know why that sign is

there. You see, they look moist, they can't be vegan. I was vegan

once. You can always tell vegan stuff by how dry and tasteless it is. "

What unique customer service, I thought.

Ignore the fact that they may have been labeling something vegan that

was not in fact vegan. I can deal with that and I have. And ignore the

fact that I was obviously vegan myself (had just ordered soymilk, was

wearing PETA shirt, and expressed interest in vegan food) so he insulted

a new regular customer. Again, I'll deal with that. I do need help,

though--what is your favorite, local baked good? I want to buy a couple

of treats and bring them to Mr. I Like to Annoy My Customers. Show him

what vegan food really is, and what other cafes are offering their vegan

customers.

People's Donuts? Black China cakes and cupcakes? Those great cookies

that are made by, I think, Katherine (sold at Herbivore)?

I need advice because I was recently shocked to learn that not everyone

loves People's Donuts like I do, so I guess I better get some second and

third opinions! I don't want to make him anything, I want to show him

what he could buy and serve.

Thanks!

Alex

my favorites are the Live " cheesecakes " at Live Restaurants such as

Alive! and Cafe Gratitude.

I also love the shakes such as " I am Grace " Hazelnut at Cafe

Gratitude. Most of my vegan friends have to tell them to go easy on

the dates. (too sweet)

Judalicious has great vegan raw ice cream on weekends. They have

raw pies and cookies almost everyday. the cookies are packaged

cookies

Phiz coffee has vegan donuts. I personally can't stand the donuts.

I actually hate it so much I spit it out. Yes, I tried 2 flavors...

this is a bit off the subject

My favorite vegan energy bar is:

http://theprobar.com/about-2/

It doesn't taste like Clif bars or anything like it. It's an

organic raw, vegan bar.

It's promoted by a 20 year veggie that's vegan for 8 years.

She's a professional racer

I met her and she's really nice.

I'm going to try to ask for samples for everyone...

Whoever is baking the vegan donuts at Rainbow deserves some kind of

award.

I'll stuff a bag meant for coffee with about eight of 'em. But I'm

already eating them before I get to the checkout.

They are utterly, utterly delicious. Every single flavor. BUT

PLEASE... leave the coconut ones for me.

I called, Now and Zen's phone number and I got a disconnected number.

The ONLY review was written on 2005

As I recall they no longer make any cookies or UnTurkey.

If there's any updates, I 'll post to the list.

Yes, their vegan cookies were good and moist. However, they didn't

see enough and a lot of cookies got moldy on the shelves. (quote from

a vegan Store manager who was trying to promote the cookies)

Thanks Winnie for following up!! Love the quote and commentary. I meant to say the Whole Foods vegan chocolate cookies are luscious and moist. Now & Zen was some address I found on Google -- I'll know not to post something I didn't try for myself next time. :-) Adrienne sunny_outdoors <sunny_outdoors wrote: I called, Now and Zen's phone number and I got a disconnected number. The ONLY review was written on 2005As I recall they no longer make any cookies or

Hi all,

> Now & Zen was some address I found on Google -- I'll know not to post something I didn't try for myself next time. :-)

I think this is a good example to use as a reminder for two things:

1) Current Info: Information goes out of date so quickly, especially for food businesses and especially veg ones. We try to maintain the Ultimate Guide (UG) as the most current & comprehensive listing. I am asking everyone to please check that your favorite places to eat veg*n are listed in the Ultimate Guide. If the information has changed, please let us know. If they are not listed, don't keep them a secret. You can submit information to add them.

2) Sharing Info: The Bay Area is a huge place and the information you share will likely help someone else. As someone who has lived in the Bay Area, as a vegan, I've actually been to the (now closed) Now & Zen bakery and the (now closed) vegan restaurant of the same name in Japantown so I suspected right away this was probably old information. But to someone new to the area or new to veg*nism, maybe this was an exciting new find that was just breaking news. So when you help us keep the Ultimate Guide updated, you're helping everyone who is looking to eat plants, not animals.

Add a Review - http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/glossary.htm#addAdd a Business - http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/merch.htm?action=checkadd

Thank you to everyone who has been so diligent about sending updates and being the eyes/ears in the community for the best places to eat veg. I personally find it useful, and I know it also helps tourists and visitors who use the guide.

Cheers,

Tammy
