Hi~

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start as I transition

into being a vegan? My diet is (sadly) very heavy on animal proteins,

and I don't even know where to begin. I know that I am supposed to

try and go slowly, a friend said that I could get sick if I don't do

the transition correctly. I would appreciate any information that

anyone could provide, especially any tips on substitutes for things I

might miss!

Thank you!

Noreen

Hi Noreen,

I don't see any reason why you would get sick, unless you are not getting what your body needs. Proteins from beans, nuts, seeds, legumes, and complementing proteins, putting together grains with beans for added protein. But if you're concerned that you still won't get all you need, you could take a supplement that gives you all the amino acids you need. I picked up a formula today at my chiropractor's office, Total Amino Solution by Genesa which is recommended for nutritional psychology, chronic physical and emotional pain, lots of other stuff too, but specifically says on the jar "Low protein consumption: vegans, vegetarians, children or others who will not eat protein." It comes in vegi-capsules, and I got 180 caps for $35, which should last 2 months. (they recommend 3 to 6 a day) I think it's a good investment at about $.50 a day, and she told me I'd feel the difference right away. You can buy it at Whole Foods.

Good luck and good health,

Margi

For someone so heavily dependent on animal protein, there

is a possibility of feeling sick, not getting sick, while

transitioning to plant foods as the body is detoxifying

itself and the digestive system is getting accustomed to

different foods.

It's probably a good idea to take a daily multi-vitamin,

try to eat a diversity of foods (something even " omnivores "

often don't do, to buy meat substitutes if that suits your

interests, to drink a lot of water, to learn as much as you

can, and to not focus so much on your fears but instead to

be proud of yourself for the positive path you have now

chosen. You're making a huge difference for your personal

health, animal compassion, and eco-sustainability.

Feel free to visit my Eco-Eating page at

www.brook.com/veg for loads of info and lots of links.

There's even a section on " Making the Switch " .

Best of luck and stay connected! Peace, Dan Brook

Just as a FYI, I went to wholefoods to get a vegan multi-vitamin.

When I was speaking to an employee (who was vegan), we found the brand

she currently used was no longer vegan. They only stated they were

vegetarian on the label. But when she initially did her research,

they had vegan ingredients. They changed the ingredients adding eggs

- which still made them vegetarian as stated on their label. So, we

researched a lot of different brands to find a truly vegan vitamin.

We found a lot of companies had egg or dairy in products. Those that

truly stated vegan we good.

I do not know about the Total Amino Solution whether it is vegan or

not. But it is always good to check again if it only states

vegetarian. If it states vegan on it, please disregard. But I

thought some of you may want to check your own vitamins. :)

take care,

Mari
