Guest guest
Hi list members, in this SF Gate article Martinez city officials are considering a plan to euthanize the popular family of beavers that have been building a dam on Alhambra Creek for fear that the structure might result in the flooding of downtown this winter: http://tinyurl.com/ytv2mk The city of Martinez needs to find an alternative solution. I urge all concerned to try attend the Martinez City Council meeting on November 7, 2007 - 7:00 PM City Hall, 525 Henrietta Street or email all the council members: http://www.cityofmartinez.org/depts/mayor/default.asp to voice your opposition to the inhumane and poorly thought out solution the city officials are considering. thanks, henry
Guest guest
Hi all, Henry, thanks for sharing this and encouraging people to help the beavers. > http://tinyurl.com/ytv2mk > I urge all concerned to try attend the Martinez City Council meeting on November 7, 2007 - 7:00 PM > City Hall, 525 Henrietta Street or email all the council members: http://www.cityofmartinez.org/depts/mayor/default.asp > to voice your opposition to the inhumane and poorly thought out solution the city officials are considering. It's sad to hear the beaver family has gone from being Martinez's star attraction (back in May) to now being considered for death. What is " humanely depredate the beavers " is an interesting choice of words. Depredate means to " lay waste " or " plunder/ravage " . Here's a link to the original May article. http://tinyurl.com/23nj8z This article about a similar issue in Elk Grove and what they did. http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/188830.html Here's a PETA movie about beaver trapping that speaks to trapping them. www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=beavers The wonders of the internet ... seems like the best is something called a " beaver deceiver " .. http://beaversww.org/solutions.html If you look at this PDF, do a search for 'beaver' or go directly to pg 21 to see their " unusual partnership " with a wildlife biologist from PETA www.virginiadot.org/info/resources/04-06BiannualReoprt.pdf This isn't the first time beavers are imperiled by humans, and hopefully there have been successful solutions that can be brought to the Martinez City Council. If anyone has more info, please share .. Please contact the Martinez City Council. Even if you don't have an alternative to suggest, encouraging them to find one is important so they know public opinion isn't for 'depradation'. http://www.cityofmartinez.org/depts/mayor/default.asp Also letters to the local papers (Chronical/sfgate.com and Contra Costa Times) will keep the issue alive. Thanks for caring enough to write! Tammy
