Guest guest
Hi Michelle, I'm new, too. I started going vegetarian about a year ago, and have been almost 100% vegetarian for about 8 months. I did lose some weight, and have noticed a couple of other advantages in my health But I am a cookie-lover, so that limits me! I understand what you mean about cost -- I'm single and live by myself, but I still can't afford to buy organic produce. There are several good grocery stores in my area, so the produce may not be organic, but most of it looks pretty good. I take advantage of what's in season -- farmers' markets are great places, I don't know if any city near you has a good one, but I love them! I've got a couple of good recipes, I'll have to remember to bring them with me to post them. Guest guest
Hi Audrey, I'm a pasta lover, so I'm REALLY working hard on limiting that right now....especially since it's too easy to add more of that into your diet when you go vegetarian. I could live off of a plate of plain pasta with olive oil drizzled on top every night if I wanted to. I live in a very rural area, and there are some farms around, but their hours of business are limited and they just don't seem to have much when I go there. The best place to go is about a 2 hour drive from me, but they have a huge farm market with a large variety of produce, so I try to go there every few weeks or so to stock up. The only other farmer's markets are about an hour's drive each way, and I'd have limited hours to go to them again. I try to catch some of the local farmers selling at roadside stands, but we're having a hot dry summer and I'm not seeing as much of that as normal. I did just figure out that our local grocery store (which expanded this year to include more organic produce and a natural food section) puts their produce on sale on Thursdays...I think they must get new shipments in on Friday. I went there today and came out with quite a bit of stuff for my money, including a bag of baby carrots for 29 cents and a bag of coleslaw mix for 45 cents! So I think I'll start making regular Thursday trips and stock up for the week. I do like to keep extra veggies in the freezer for a simple soup I make year round. I only have a few good recipes to contribute myself right now, but I'll post them when I have more time. Guest guest
Hi Michelle, I know how easy it is to substitute carbs for meat! I could live off peanut butter and whole wheat bread (which actually is a good source of protein...) Maybe next summer you'll have to grow your own produce? I wish I was able to do that, but I'm in an apartment. It's been an extremely wet spring and summer here in the Kansas City area (which has made my container garden flowers look great!) Where do you live?
