Can anyone recommend a good juicer?

Hi everyone,

Since I am newly vegan and have no experience as a cook,

I find myself eating a lot of pre-packaged and processed

foods. I will likely be taking some cooking classes

in the future, but I think getting some basic kitchen

gadgets might be a good first step.

Despite that I am vegan, I don't feel like I eat enough

fruits and vegetables, so I am thinking a good juicer

might help me out there.

I am also getting more interested in raw foods and am

considering that I might not want to invest too much

in cooking supplies, classes etc.

Any suggestions, books, products, websites etc.

would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Michelle

Top of the line is Norwalk. Made in Santa Monica, CA and very expensive

- over $1000.00.

Best juice around - no pulp - ever.

Second is Champion. Made in Sacramento area. You can pick up a used one

for about $150.00 to $200.00. It has a commercial motor and continuous

feed. Very easy to clean. The only piece that may need replacement is

the blade assembly - if it was misused - which can be bought from the

manufacturer for about $35.00.

Hope this helps.

I'd buy the Champion Commercial Juicer. It depends if you want a centerfugal (Omega, Acme) or a masticating (Champion) juicer because there is differences to both:Champion:Easier to clean. The assembly comes off easily. No pulp build up. This allows for continius juicing and allows you to put the pulp through twice is so desired. You can replace the screen with a "blank" that allows you to use different types of nuts to make nut butters. The juice is darker in color and a bit pulpier. The motor tend to last a really long time. They've been around 50+ years and i know some people that are using ones about that old.Omega:It tends to do leafier vegetables such a kale & spinach better.Juice is clearer.Want a discount? Get a 2008 SBC phone book. There are 20% off coupons everything in the store on certain days in Feb. at Rainbow Grocery in them. The Commercial Champion sells there for $249.99. With the 20% off coupon it comes out to $200ish which is a pretty good deal brand new.I should mention that I work at Rainbow. I still think it's a pretty good deal, but shop around. I hope this helps. Take care....Shad On Jan 27, 2008, at 10:16 PM, news.etc wrote:Top of the line is Norwalk. Hi Michelle,

Congratulations on becoming vegan! Very exciting. I became raw in July

after 11 years as a vegan. I did endless hours of research on gadgets

and am very happy with my choices.

I highly recommend investing in a Vitamix. It's an amazing blender

with speeds up to 300 mph! I use it at least three times per day. When

I became raw, I stopped drinking soy milk and stopped eating tofu. Now

I make my own milk in the Vitamix.

Hemp milk

1/2 cup hemp seeds - you can also do 1/2 cup almonds or cashews

a few dates

a splash of agave or vanilla

5 cups of water

The Vitamix is also excellent for making green smoothies. This is a

great way to get a ton of greens. I throw in 60% fruit, 40% veggies, a

banana, and some water. The Vitamix blends it up and turns it into a

great smoothie. I usually do 3 pears, a huge handful of kale/spinach,

a banana, and some water.

You can get the Vitamix at Costco for around $300. You'll have to call

Costco to find out if they're in stock (Vitamix does a road show and

is in select stores at specific times).

I got a Breville Juice Fountain for Christmas and while it doesn't

extract as much juice as a Champion, I'm happy with it. It's easier to

clean than most juicers.

Here are a few of my favorite recipe sites (mostly raw):

Sunny Raw Kitchen

http://thesunnyrawkitchen.blogspot.com/

Ani's Raw Food Kitchen (she has a great raw recipe book)

http://www.aniphyo.com/

Gone Raw

http://goneraw.com/

After going raw, my energy level practically doubled, my skin cleared

up, my digestive system improved, and I've never felt better. I think

I ate too much processed, junk vegan food. And I no longer throw

anything away! It's all compost.

I love talking about this stuff, so please let me know if you have any

other questions.

Again, congratulations!

~Rose
