Guest guest
In the nov/dec issue of VegNews I picked up this am, hipwhip is no more. The writer suggested "Soyatoo" as a sub, but said it was more like "reddiwhip." I am not familiar with rediwhip, but someone in the group might be. Guest guest
Soyatoo is pretty good. It's in an aerosol kind of can like Rediwhip which is a spray whipped cream. I don't remember what Rediwhip tastes like but we love it Soyatoo. It's made by a German company, I think. It costs about $5.00 a can here where I live. You buy it and take your chances though as to whether or not the can is going to work. I've actually stopped buying it because far too many of the cans didn't work. You follow the directions, and then push the nozzle for the soy whip to come out and many times it doesn't. Sometimes you use it once, put it in the fridge, take it out to use another time and the same can that worked last time no longer works. The folks at Wild Oats (now Whole Foods) and Nutrition S'Mart tell me they get lots of complaints about that. Too much money to waste when the cans don't work. The only time I buy it now is for Thanksgiving or other special meals - then I take the chance hoping the can will work.I also don't think I would try to use it in a pie or other recipe. I just don't think it would stand up to that. Guest guest
There is a sticker on the ones I get that you should not put the Soyatoo in a the refrigerator. Since I don't put it in the fridge anymore, the cans always work. Also, we (= in the Netherlands) can get packages of Soyatoo that you have to whip yourself. so that would be ideal for using it in pie recipes.Gayle <dilemma5 Sent: Monday, November 5, 2007 11:54:06 AMRe: hipwhip Soyatoo is pretty good. Guest guest
Thanx for the tip, but since they are in the refrigerated part of the grocery store where I buy them, I don't have much choice there. <sigh> Also, when I bought them from Pangea, they never were in the fridge and I still had the same problem even when I didn't put the cans in the fridge (as soon as we got them we indulged! LOL). From what I remember on the cans I bought, it says it doesn't need to be refrigerated until it is used. After it is used, it has to be refrigerated. I could be very wrong about that; I'll check next time, but it won't really matter since all the places around here that sell it, put it in the refrigerated section before you even buy it.God's Peace,Gayle Arine Mentink Nov 7, 2007 2:26 AM Re: hipwhip There is a sticker on the ones I get that you should not put the Soyatoo in a the refrigerator. Guest guest
For last year's holidays I was able to find tubbed light whipping cream that's vegan, but don't hold me to it as to which brand. That said, I'm pretty sure it's Walmart's store brand in the freezer section that's the counterpart to CoolWhip. Guest guest
Okay redi whip, works great, but not low fat. :-) It is vegan, may be stored in the freezer, thawed and whipped as needed. Guest guest
I am at work, but I am pretty sure that the product I am thinking of is redi whip.. I will check when I get home and let you know the name. It has no cream in it. It is only found in the freezer section. Guest guest
> For last year's holidays I was able to find tubbed light whipping cream that's vegan, but don't hold me to it as to which brand. But are any of these fatfree and vegan? Even if a label says " fat free " it might mean the amount of fat per serving is low enough that legally they can say it's fatfree. Cool Whip, in tubs, is found only in the freezers. I don't think either version of CoolWhip is vegan, although I heard that the fat-free was at one time. Never had it myself so can't say if it was or wasn't for sure. Sue in NJ

Guest guest
Please don't think that just because something is pareve that it's automatically vegan. Kosher Parve products are allowed to contain eggs, honey, and fish. So you still need to read the label. See http://www.vegsource.com/jo/qakosher.htm . Also, according to the Vegetarian Resource Group, kosher gelatins are not necessarily vegetarian: What is kosher gelatine? Kosher gelatin can be made with fish bones, and/or beef skins. Contrary to assumptions, it is also considered kosher to use it with dairy products. Kosher law is very complex and the bones and hides used in gelatin production are considered pareve. The general meaning of pareve refers to foods that are neither milk nor meat, and many people assume this means that the product is vegetarian. However, OU pareve certified ingredients can have animal products, such as fish, eggs, and gelatin, in them. " Kosher Gelatin Marshmallows: Glatt Kosher and 'OU-Pareve', " an article that appeared in Kashrus Magazine, explains the distinctions. A quote from the article is as follows: " ...since the gelatin product is from hides or bones - not real flesh - and has undergone such significant changes, it is no longer considered 'fleishig' (meat) but 'pareve', and can be eaten with dairy products. " Just a reminder to always be on the lookout, if you're vegan. Susan , " Smith Family " <Forgesasmi wrote: > > Okay, the topping is *Rich's Whip Topping. Guest guest
Okay, I found some info on the ingredients of Rich's Whip Topping: Ingredients: water, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated coconut oil, contains less than 2% of the following: carbohydrate gum, sugar, polysorbate 60, polyglycerol esters of fatty acids, salt, sodium alginate, soy lecithin, artificial flavor, sodium citrate, natural flavor, colored with turmeric and annatto extracts.Personally, I don't eat high fructose corn syrup, but you know how the holidays are and at least this is better than eating any animal goo. I'm still searching for nutritional info, but with with coconut oil as the 3rd ingredient, it's pretty safe to say it's not fat free or low fat.
