If you've tried other soy " meat " products & liked them, you'll like this too.The stuffing was pretty good, but I would make extra veggie stuffing too, as they don't give you alot. The gravy was also good. I didn't really like the " drumsticks. " I think they were made of tempeh, which I'm not fond of. My only other complaint is that the " skin " is kind of tough, though it is tasty. I marinated mine with the marinade they suggested on the box (orange juice, brown sugar,etc..), and it is crucial to marinate in order to keep it from drying out. Anyway, good luck and enjoy! Guest guest
I didn't like it much last year. It's fine if you emotionally (or for peer pressure) need a place-holder for the turkey. But personally, I love all the things that go with Thanksgiving dinner and am satisfied not to have a substitute for the turkey. Mashed and sweet potatoes, three-bean salad, corn bread, cranberry sauce, vegetarian stuffing, vegetarian gravy, and pie. I don't need anything else. It's heavy on the carbs and low on the protein but hey - it's Thanksgiving! If someone else is cooking and is willing to make all of these items vegetarian, I can do just fine! Of course, some people manage to introduce meat into each and every dish! -- Dodi - cdipietro Thursday, October 11, 2001 10:24 AM Re: Tofurky At 09:52 AM 10/11/01 -0700, you wrote:>Hello! Guest guest
We tried it a few years back and it gets a thumbs down. I would not spend my money on it again. The only part I thought was ok were the tempeh drum sticks. Everyone else 4 of us agreed not good.
Guest guest
Hi Chris and all- I have been eating Tofurky for about 4 years, and I love it! We usually buy a couple because they are small. Also, the gravy is available seperately, if you want more of it. I usually make extra stuffing too. I got to tour the Turtle Island plant while in Hood River and the folks there are wonderful! If you are ever in Hood River, Oregon give them a call. Since I live in Oregon it is easy to get here. Candi
Guest guest
Cristene, I tried tofurky and did not like it at all. My main entree for Thanksgiving is a " roast " that I make like a terrine or pate -- layered in a ceramic dish and baked, then unmolded. It consists of layers of chestnut puree, a spinach mixture, chopped mixed nuts, and a pepper mixture. I serve it garnished with roasted vegetables and offer mushroom gravy. It's delicious, pretty to look at, and very filling. In fact I usually end up freezing half of it for another time. I got this recipe and several other great Thanksgiving recipes from a British vegetarian web site, of all places. Another possibility for Thanksgiving is the neat loaf from Jennifer Raymond's wonderful vegan cookbook The Peaceful Palate. It's easy and delicious, and can be dressed up nicely for a special meal. Guest guest
Terry, While I will still be making and serving the cabbage rolls I stuff with traditional bread dressing along with mushroom wine gravy, I would love to make the " roast " you make also. Will you please share the recipe? BTW, I also dislike tofurkey and all those other turkey substitutes. They never went over well for us. Guest guest
I am interested as well. My son is allergic to dairy, soy, corn, wheat, eggs, oats, yeast, and peanuts, so the tofurkey and un turkey are both out for us. Guest guest
Heh heh heh You working for Tofurky now, Ross? What happened to the day job? (or, as you're a musician, the night job!) Let's skip the commercial messages here unless they are giving info we don't know, don't have, etc etc - okay? To the casual observer they look suspiciously like spam (the other non-meat) ;=) But your post (the link in it) reminds me to put up some links, including one to care2.com. Guest guest
First I want to apologize if this topic has been done before (I couldn't find it) or if it's not within the guidelines of this group. This is the first Thanksgiving that I will be trying to make a tofurky (last year we did a 100% non traditional " weenie " roast for thanksgiving.) I am also only about a year and a half into being vegetarian (vegan when I can) I have been appointed to make 2 tofurky's for the community Thanksgiving dinner. Any advice and recipes are very much appreciated. The Tofurky is already purchased, so please, no knocking the brand, just cooking help, and of course fat free (or as close as we can get?) and vegan. (Is asking for a recipe wrong for this board??? I hope not...) Thanks in advance for your help Amy (the soon to be " tofurky queen " )
Guest guest
My daughter and I like the Tofurkey roast however we do not like the stuffing. We usually cut the roast in half and take out the stuffing and stuff it with our own. We went out for Thanksgiving so I made it last night, I made a marinade out of Jack Daniels mustard, orange marmalade and balsamic winger. It came out pretty good. We don't like the quorn roast or the naked quorn cutlets, I think for us the taste to much like the real thing. In a message dated 11/29/2008 8:39:10 A.M. Eastern Standard Time, brighter writes: How strange. The gravy is the thing I like the least, but I love the Tofurky roast and the deli slices. Not that there's anything actually wrong with the gravy, but it seems expensive to me for what little you get in that tub. I've always substituted a red wine gravy since I can make SO much and pour it over the Tofurky, veggies, rice and whatever else there might be around. I've read many negative Tofurky roast comments though and wonder if it's best when prepared WITH a lot of veggies and juices surrounding it?? Somehow, all that surrounding moisture seems to keep the texture " right " . I've made the roast just with the suggested basting glaze and was not as happy with the results. _@theferalvegethe_ ( ) , " ~ PT ~ " <patchouli_troll@pat> wrote: > The only thing of Tofurky brand that I really like is > the tubs of mushroom gravy with vegan giblets. > That is really good! Guest guest
i did a tofurkey roast last year for TFT (Turkey-Free Thursday) and personally i didn't care for it. it was excellent used in a white bean chili (after scooping out the stuffing, of course), but i didn't really care for eating it on its own to be honest. this year, i did a Quorn Turk'y roast - oh, my gosh! YUM-O! i want to swing by the health food market this week and stock up on them for the rest of the year. it was positively delicious! i didn't notice the taste so much as the texture - i did it in the oven with vegetables to roast together. i've noticed that the Quorn products have a much more palatable (at least to me) texture than the Tofurkey products - but at the same time, i don't really care for most meat analogs. the only vegetarian gravy (from a kit anyhow) that i've had any success with are the packets - i think they're made by Hain Naturals (i have them in my cupboards at home, but i am currently at work). i'm not big on mushrooms - taste or texture - so i tend to shy away from mushroom gravy. -- xoxo, ^8^ Reni ^8^ when I'm with someone, I just want space to breathe; and when I'm alone, I just want someone to breathe into.
