Guest guest
I have recipes calling for ground flax seed and I can't find it pre-ground in Australia. I can buy flax seeds, but my food processor won't chop them as they are too fine. I have heard people suggest using a coffee grinder or even a pepper grinder so I went looking today. The coffee grinder runs about $40 -- don't really want to spend that much just to grind some flax seeds. I asked the woman at the store whether she had a pepper grinder that didn't already come with pepper in it and she said yes, but that the flax seeds would eventually clog it up because of the oil. Anyone have any experience with this that they could suggest the best way? Thanks much. Anna
Guest guest
hi anna my husband grinds his flaxseed every morning in a small pestle and mortar, so that might be an option for you. it's best not to buy it pre-ground anyway, as it loses its nutritional benefits quickly once ground. cheers alice (i'm over the ditch in nz - congrats on winning the netball a few minutes ago!) Guest guest
I received a pestle and mortar for Christmas and I did try that but it didn’t work! Maybe I’ll try it again, thanks! Guest guest
With things that fine, I find it helps to move the pestle as though you're stirring the stuff, not crushing it. But I'd buy a cheap ($10) coffee grinder like the one pictured at this link. It's what we use, and it's lasted us a couple of years already, so it's a good deal: http://www.esalton.com/cgi-bin/AEDDE21A/mac/additmdtl.mac/showItemDetail?item=11\ 19 & qtyA=753 & phsO=N & desc=TOASTMASTER%20COFFEE%20GRINDER & drpshp=N & alOrd=Y & iQty=.00\ 0 & oQty=.000 & initQty=1 & assortParent=N & itemForSale=Y & styleName= & fixD= & face=.00 & gft\ c= & stck=Y & prefS= & calledFrom=DS & ordInfo1= & ordInfo2= & ordInfo3= & ordMan1=N & ordMan2=N\ & ordMan3=N & persCode= & persReqd= & persLink=%20 & shipRemaining=0 & daysBetween=0 & daysBe\ tweenFix=0 & monthsBetween=0 (If that link won't work for you, try http://preview.tinyurl.com/39447u ) Serene Coop wrote: > I received a pestle and mortar for Christmas and I did try that but it > didn’t work! Guest guest
I buy the seeds whole in bulk and keep them in my freeze in an airtight container. When I need to use them, I grind the seeds in a coffee grinder that I don't use for coffee. I guess you could use a grinder you also use for coffee but make sure you clean it out good before grinding flax seeds in it. Guest guest
It takes a while (at least 5 minutes) in the food processor for the seeds to break up, but they do eventually. -Jenny > The blender works just fine. Guest guest
One more thing: if you use your coffee grinder to also grind coffe, just throw some raw rice in and grind it, it completely gets rid of the coffee and coffee smell. I only have one coffee grinder and because of grinding the rice inbetween, I use it for everything, even spices. Laura M. Get easy, one-click access to your favorites. Make your homepage. Guest guest
Anna, Have you tried a regular blender? The blades are smaller than a food processor, so that might work better. Keep an eye out for sales, though...the coffee grinder or mini-chopper are handy little things for other stuff other than flax seeds! Guest guest
Honestly it never occurred to me to try the blender. Our blender is RARELY ever used, it’s a very nice big one we got for a wedding gift, it’s just we hate to clean the darned thing so my hubby only used it on occasion to make shakes. Since he got a milkshake maker, he doesn’t even use it for that anymore. I may have to drag it out and give it a try! Thanks everyone for the replies Anna On 18/11/07 2:45 PM, " veggieblake " <veggies wrote: Anna, Have you tried a regular blender? Guest guest
Anna, I always use my blender. I do at least a cup of flax seeds at a time to make it worth the clean-up, and then I store them in the freezer. I've never seen the need to buy a separate appliance. Guest guest
I don't know about shipping to Australia and how the currency converts but have you tried Amazon? http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-6012300-6985747?url=search-alias%3Daps & \ field-keywords=coffee+grinder There are several going for between $10 and $20. I have the Braun and it works great for flax, oatmeal, nuts, etc. I'd also give ebay a shot. Gina Cindi <cindi93069 Monday, November 19, 2007 10:13:13 AM Re: Grinding flax seeds I would suggest a good ole mortar & pestle to grind up the seeds. You can probably get one for pretty cheap. Guest guest
Ahhh! I hadn't thought of that! Are there no " travel " converters available somewhere, perhaps that you could use for one? 't'aint the currency so much as the current - or whatever LOL - American electricals don't work in Oz and vice versa. Saaaaad but true. But maybe you guys know something I don't. Guest guest
Yes, provided the appliance can run on either 110 or 220 volts, you can use an adapter to plug it in to our outlets. The prongs of our plugs are different shape and placement than in America. Same with other countries .... The adapter works for many different kinds.
