Susan's chocolate orange cake

Susan, your fat-free chocolate orange cake:

.... looks SO delicious ... I want to try making it for Christmas, but we

don't have actual bundt cake pans here in Australia. There are other kinds

of pans that look similar but are much taller and not as wide. I also found

a springform pan that does have an insert to give it a decorative top, with

a tube in the center like a bundt pan which is more similar in sized to a

bundt pan. I wonder if that will work ... I always worry the batter will

leak out of a springform pan because it doesn't seal completely. Do you

think that would work for this cake?

Hi Anna,

 

I think any pan will work. You can even bake it in two round pans and

stack it in layers. If I were you, I'd test the springform pan by

filling it with water and seeing if it leaks first. Though they're

not supposed to leak, I'm like you and always worry about that.

 

Different pans will mean different cooking times, so be sure to check

it with a toothpick early and don't be afraid to let it cook a little

longer or shorter.

I have a couple of springform pans. Neither of them leak, though I will often wrap some foil on the outside and place the pan on a cookie sheet or in a jelly roll pan, just in case it decides to leak on it's own volition :)Susan Voisin <susan wrote: Hi Anna, I think any pan will work. Well it definitely leaks with water, I tried that immediately ... But my hubby suggested that perhaps cake batter being thicker it won’t. It’s brand new, so I was surprised it leaked that rapidly.

I initially used a 9 inch black decorated holiday tube pan. The cake even after 70 minutes did not test done in center. I decided to cover it with foil, let it cool. I inverted it to find out there was a wet gooey batter ring in the center but I simply told people it was a fudgy filling. The cake was good.

 

I made it a second time, No orange juice or vinegar this time., I substituted coffee and baked it in a bundt pan this time and it baked better.

 

I did not use the icing. I took a fat free ( I don't think it was vegan ) caramel topping and spooned it over the cake and then added crushed almonds.

 

I liked the cake better with the coffee and it definitely baked much better in the bundt instead of the narrow tube pan!

 

Just my experience and opinion!

What size bundt pan are you using for this recipe? I didn’t realize there was more than one size, and I’m shopping online to find one because we don’t have them in Australia, but I’m finding 6-cup or 12-cup bundt pans. I’m not sure what size the recipe should be for.

Thank you!! :) I’m very much looking forward to trying the recipe — It’ll be nice at family gatherings to have a low-fat dessert that I can eat!
