Hello. I'm new to the group. I've been a vegetarian for 5 years--

for about a year I've been trying harder to be a 'good' vegetarian.

(That always brings up images of the Wizard of Oz and being a good or

a bad witch. he he)

Anyways, for the last 2 weeks I've been vegan and want to stay on

track. I've been cooking up a storm and trying so hard to eat a

variety of good stuff but I still feel weak and like I'm missing

something. I take a vegetarian vitamin.

What do you suppose I am missing? Is there a particular vitamin that

anyone could suggest?

I thought I would have a really hard time giving up cheese and its

been no big problem. My body is craving egggs somewhat but its too

early to give in.

Thanks in advance for your help. Its really encouraging to see an

active group with large numbers--sometimes I feel like the only

person in the world trying to be a vegan!

Julie,

Could you post a sample of what you are eating in a typical day? If

you are eating only fruit and low calorie veggies, you might not be

eating enough calories. Another possibility is that you are having

lots of things that will cause your blood sugar to peak, and then

drop, like products made of processed flour and sugar.

I don't think any vitamin deficiency would show up so quickly. The

only thing missing from a vegan diet is B12, and it takes a long time

for one's body stores to get deficient. Dr. McDougall says it takes

3 years on a strict vegan diet.

hi julie

good on you for making such a great change! sometimes it's hard on the

body to have a dietary change, even if that change is actually for the

better. stick with it! oh, and be kind to yourself.

best wishes

alice

Hi Julie

You may be missing vitamin b12. I take a liquid multivitamin and iron

supplement called Floradix. There is so much yummyness in the mixture

which is nice and fruity in the morning as a quick wake up shot of

herbs and vitamins. I have tried the iron specific version but the

one which is also including iron includes more herbs and gives more

zing and vitality! And less darkness underneath the eyes too, thus an

indicator of health and good for your self esteem.

Blessed Be

Julie,

Why not track your diet for a week on fitday.com and see what it says as

far as rda of vitamins? That way you will know exactly where you are short.

Take care,

Aly
