Guest guest
Thanks for the suggestions:) My stomach at this point is so stretched out that I literally have to eat till I am almost about to burst before my body says stop. So I assume these are foods I can pig out on and slowly reduce to normal portions? Guest guest
Hi Samantha If you feel the need to "pig out", I would suggest making a huge green salad with lots of greens and fresh vegetables, in a big mixing bowl, and consuming that before any entre. That works for me. You find that the chewing involved, and hence, slower intake, makes one satisfied before too many calories are consumed. If you stick to whole grains in moderate amounts, less than 3 or 4 fruit a day, unlimited fresh and steamed vegies , a good serving of legumes, you should be fine. Best sources recommend staying completely off of refined flours, sugars in any form, including too much fruit, and restrained use of refined soy, or processed foods is best for optimal health and nutrition. Hope that helps lc carol Samantha wrote: Thanks for the suggestions:) My stomach at this point is so stretched out that I literally have to eat till I am almost about to burst before my body says stop. That's EXACTLY how I was before going vegan. It was so bad, I was begging my doctor for surgery to make my stomach smaller. (Thank God she turned me away!) > So I assume these are foods I can pig out on and slowly reduce to > normal portions? Most of them, yes. The exceptions would be to limit things like olives that are higher in fat - any food that's higher in fat is also way higher in calories plus some think that a high fat diet will mess up your body's " I'm full " mechanism. And peanut butter can really put a hurt on attempts to lose weight and get healthier so make it a " special treat " food. Small amounts and pretend it's something like cookies that you might treat yourself with but can't eat all the time. If you slowly increase the amount of fiber in your diet (don't do it too quickly or you will have digestive symptoms) you will come to a level where you can pig out as much as you want but you are eating fewer calories because the high fiber content makes you feel full quicker. Before I went vegan, I used to set a calorie limit for the day (a very reasonable limit, mind you) and I would find myself STARVING in the evening and DESPARATE to eat something. It was only through sheer force of will that I could keep with my calorie limit. What blew my mind was that when I switched to low-fat, high-fiber vegan food I couldn't keep with that calorie limit, but for the opposite reason: there was just no way on earth that I could possibly eat that many calories! Day after day, I was falling a couple of hundred calories short of my diet goals and after a few months of that I just quit counting the calorie altogether because I finally felt confident that if I stick with the right types of food the amounts will take care of themselves. Now if I stop losing weight long before I am close to my goal weight (which is a very generous goal weight of 150 pounds on my 5'6 " body) then I will go back to looking at the calories and fat and so forth that I am eating every day. I have really great software that makes it easy to keep track of everything I eat so it won't be that hard to go back to keeping track of everything if I have to. But from what I've learned as a fat-free vegan, I know now that if I do go back to keeping track, it won't be so that I can set a limit and let myself suffer if I reach it and am still hungry. It will be so that I can take a close look at what I am eating and see if I need to make more adjustments to which types of foods I will seek out and which types I will steer away from or limit my portions of. So take heart! You sound a lot like me, how I used to be. You list a lot of the foods I really LOVED to eat before but I honestly don't find myself missing them now. Sometimes I get frustrated when I've left myself with nothing quick to eat (so I try to always have something quick and easy and healthy in the fridge and/or freezer) but after a couple of months the frustration at not eating the foods I used to eat went away. Your tastebuds will re-set if you stick with a new way of eating and you will start to adjust to it. For example, grapefruit doesn't taste sour or bitter to me any more! It tasts tart but it tastes VERY sweet. You know your taste buds have changed when you find yourself craving grapefruit, peeling it like an orange, and feeling so decadent eating it because it's so sweet and tasty! LOL Be gentle with yourself and be patient with yourself and I think you really will see changes you didn't expect if you can keep your determination up long enough to let things shift in you. Sparrow p.s. wasn't that a great list siderea came up with! And there are people here with recipes for everything on that list if you need help. In most cases, if you ask for a recipe for one of those you will get five or six different versions of it! I also totally agree with Siderea: eat a big salad first. Don't put fatty dressing on it - use flavored vinegars with no oil or look at the recipe site for other salad dressing recipes to try. Fatty dressings make it worthless to eat a salad. Follow that with lots of veggies, especially green and yellow ones. Then eat the entree you've picked out. You will be amazed at how much fat-free vegan food you can put on your plate and still have only half the calories of one little beef pot pie or chicken burrito. It's out of this world! I am still amazed that I can have a huge feast and still be losing weight.
