Guest guest
I lost a friend to cancer a little over a month ago and in her memory, many of her friends are going to plant tomatoes this year. She always had the most beautiful veggies in pots. Does anyone know of a group or a site that can help me make my pots of tomatoes vegan. My husband has always used bone meal and I won't do that. Any and all ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stef
Guest guest
Hi Steph I grow all my veg in pots. Had to buy potting mix to start out with, living in an apartment and no dirt to grow in. We have a garbage pail with holes poked in it in the corner of the balcony for compost. In it goes torn paper, cardboard, kitchen scraps, lawn clippings from the landscaper and rakings from the trimmed field behind our church, which are heavy with vetch and clover this time of year. Compost tea, or kelp tea seem to keep thing looking healthy. Vegan Organic Network has some good info sheets on gardening with plantbased ammendments. Hope that helps lc carol steffdav46 wrote: I lost a friend to cancer a little over a month ago and in her memory, many of her friends are going to plant tomatoes this year. Guest guest
I have been practicing Square Foot Gardening (www.squarefootgardening.com), which is a form of container gardening. To fill the boxes you use something called Mel's Mix, which is equal parts vermiculite, compost or topsoil, and peat moss (make it yourself). You can do the same thing in pots (Been there, done that too! Used to live in an apartment on the top floor-people below us didn't like it, but we sure did!)steffdav46 <steffdav46 wrote: I lost a friend to cancer a little over a month ago and in her memory, many of her friends are going to plant tomatoes this year. Guest guest
I use Garden Lime by Epsoma in place of bone meal. Our local Lowe's store carries it. Don't know where you live. Their products are carried in most garden stores in the eastern U.S. Here's the website info: http://www.espoma.com/content.aspx?type=p & intCategoryID=2 & id=8You can search to find stores that carry it in your area.Martha OT...vegan gardening I lost a friend to cancer a little over a month ago and in her memory, many of her friends are going to plant tomatoes this year.
