Guest guest
This is completely off-topic, so feel free to reply to me off-list. I'm looking for places to eat in Arizona, particularly out-of-the-way places like Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Canyon de Chelly. I know there aren't vegetarian restaurants in any of those places, but if anyone knows of regular places where it's possible to order something vegan, please let me know. I'd also appreciate vegetarian restaurant suggestions for Phoenix and Sedona. Thanks! Susan susan
Guest guest
Susan, Phoenix has several nice veg-friendly places to eat, including one that is totally vegan (green). Here is a website with the info you are asking for: http://www.vegguide.org/region/274 You can widen it to double check northern AZ - you just might find something! What are you coming here for, just as the furnace is firing up?? Guest guest
I have found that it’s difficult (maybe impossible) to find vegan restaurants (especially fat-free), serving delicious food in New Mexico. I suppose that is likely to be true throughout the desert southwest; especially in the sparsely settled parts. We bring fat-free vegan dishes wrapped in fat-free lavash bread in a cooler with ice packs when we drive far from home. (Plus, fresh fruit). I wish we could find places where the food tastes good, is vegan and also fat-free. I hope there are positive answers to your question. Guest guest
Hi Susan, I just got back from a trip to the Grand Canyon. I knew I'd be doing a lot of camping so I didn't try too hard to find good restaurants and, as a result, I didn't find any. The Grand Canyon South Rim had surprisingly few options for vegetarians. I only tried two places there before giving up, and at one place I had a vegetarian waiter who said he has trouble finding good food anywhere there, and he isn't even vegan. At that particular place (Bright Angel Lodge), I had to settle for chips & salsa, because the chef was unavailable to tell me if any of the ingredients in any of the dishes were vegan. I did much better eating my own food. Every grocery store, no matter how remote had decent packaged lettuce and spinach, and apples and oranges; and the only place that didn't have fresh berries was the grand canyon market (of course). so I was usually able to make a big delicious salad of greens, berries, raw walnuts (brought from home), and maple syrup (we started calling it the elixir because it would make anything taste good). or a salad with greens, walnuts and apples, a touch of seasoned rice vinegar, and a bit of maple syrup. or a salad with greens and beans. We had a supply of canned beans and veggies which made better meals than anything I got at a restaurant. It helped that we had an electric cooler and a hotpot for heating the canned goods. Like I said, I didn't try very hard to find a good restaurant. I'm sure Phoenix and Flagstaff and Sedona have good veggie options but we didn't stop in there. In Albuquerque, we had a good dinner at Whole Foods, before loading up on supplies for the trip home (the usual greens, fruit, and berries). the camp cooking was fun, made a lot of good soups, and it was easy to clean up since we didn't use any oil. combining that with the salads, I ate quite well. -barb On May 18, 2008, at 10:41 AM, Susan Voisin wrote: > This is completely off-topic, so feel free to reply to me off-list. > I'm looking for places to eat in Arizona, particularly out-of-the-way > places like Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, and Canyon de Chelly. Guest guest
Thanks for the website link, Janet! When we decided to vacation in AZ, we didn't know it'd be so hot at the end of May. Norm, I worry that AZ will be similar to your experience in New Mexico. We will probably buy a cooler when we get to Sedona and stock it with food for the other parts of the trip. Barbara, reading your message really makes me wish we were camping. Normally when we vacation, we rent a cabin with a kitchen so that we can cook our own meals. AZ is the first place we've gone where there are no rental units available outside of the cities. We could get one in Sedona, but out by the canyons they do not seem to exist. So we'll be in motels the entire time. I'm getting worried! Thanks, everyone, for your responses. I'm grateful for all suggestions. Guest guest
When I am away from home at an unfamiliar location I look for a Chinese restaurant and order steamed vegetables. My other favorite fat free vegan fare is Vietnamese vegetable soup or salad. John On Behalf Of Susan Voisin Sunday, May 18, 2008 6:00 PM Re: OT: Arizona Vegans Thanks for the website link, Janet! Guest guest
Northern AZ will still be chilly at night, but it was terribly hot today in phoenix. I've only lived here 6 months, so I am still learning about this climate (from VT - a universe away!) - Susan Voisin Sunday, May 18, 2008 3:00 PM Re: OT: Arizona Vegans Thanks for the website link, Janet! Guest guest
I have eaten in very nice Chinese restaurants in Albuquerque. The " steamed " veggies were very flavorful........so I got to thinking. I suspect they may have used chicken broth in the rice and in the vegetables. Now, I can't get myself to go back. I would surely return if I was sure that there was nothing in there that came from something that had a face. Guest guest
Norm I always ask for my meal to be steamed with no broth unless they have vegetable broth. I also like Thai food at a local restaurant and supply them with a case of fat free vegetable broth and have them stir fry my meals with the broth instead of oil. Guest guest
Phoenix metropolitan area - I am actually in Chandler - has Chinese, Guam, Vietnams, Thai, Mongolian, Japanese, Greek, and Ethiopian. I am sure there are lots that I don't know about, yet. If you want to walk on the wild side, you can head just north of the grand canyon over the Utah border to a brand new cafe, the merry wives, that's named for polygamy. It doesn't sound very vegan. Mormons are mandated to eat meat only sparingly, but I don't know about the fundamentalist "cousins": http://mustv.com/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90453448 - roysnorm Sunday, May 18, 2008 7:33 PM Re: OT: Arizona Vegans I have eaten in very nice Chinese restaurants in Albuquerque. Guest guest
Not sure if you'll be this far north but there are several restaurants in Kanab, Utah (just 3 miles north of the Arizona border) that have really good vegan options. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is located in Kanab and many of the employees are vegetarian/vegan so most of the local restuarants have at least a few options. However some go above and beyond: Rewind Cafe- Very cool fifties diner looking place with a separate vegetarian menu, with several vegan options. The staff are very knowledgable about the differences between vegetarian and vegan. Laid back Larry's - coffee shop with smoothies, soups and sandwiches. They ladies who own the shop (Valerie and Lureen) are very friendly and will let you know which items are vegan or can be made vegan. Rockin V Cafe - They always have a few vegetarian/vegan choices. Guest guest
Thanks, Kelly! Unfortunately, we won't be able to get that far north--or at least we don't plan to. If by chance we do, I will definitely look for these restaurants. Guest guest
Oh by the way, bring something warm, weather predicts snow tonite around Flagstaff at 7000 - 8000 ft elevation...we are just north of Phoenix and it is 69 out right now and windy... still trying to look at flights for the three day, such a hassle to get there. They certainly aren't in a convenient area..it's a two hour bus ride from San Francisco plus a taxi! I saw that there is a two flight option by going to LA but the next flight is Alaska Airlines and an 8 hour delay and double the price to land in Santa Rosa!!! oy, not for me!!! Guest guest
Thanks, Nancy! I've been warned to bring a jacket just in case. It looks like weather in AZ is varied and changeable. I hope you'll be able to make it to the McDougall weekend. For those of you who don't know, I'll be giving a cooking demonstration at the McDougall Celebrity Chef Weekend on July 27-29. I'm so excited to get to meet the McDougalls, as well as Bryanna Clark Grogan and other vegan chefs/cookbook authors. It's in Santa Rosa, CA, and there is more info about it here: http://www.drmcdougall.com/health_celebrity_chef_weekend.html I'd love to see some of you there! Guest guest
Hey Nancy, that's wonderful! I can't wait to see you there. (I'll be the one in the corner, looking terrified.) I've heard that Oprah was going vegan for 21 days, but I haven't had time to read anything more about it. It could be a way to get more people interested in veganism--at least a foot in the door.
