Guest guest
Kirsten asked about coral calcium. Well, first of all it would NOT be vegetarian. Coral is an animal, not a plant. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ from Maida Please sign my petition: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/738171316
Guest guest
Posted by: " genny_y2k " genny_y2k genny_y2k Mon Aug 14, 2006 5:04 am (PST) Thanks for posting this informaion. I agree and would like to remind Everyone to be cautious taking calcium supplements. Apx.10 years ago, As healthy as I as I was,and Vegetarian. I had a microscopic kidney Stone that felt like a boulder. Thanks be it passed. The Dr. Told me That almost all kidney stones are formed by excess calcium . I would also like to add that excess calcium can also settle into your joints which leads to aching joints and eventually Arthritis. I'd like to share some old natural medicine that was given to me by a good friend due to my aching joints everyday as I heft 45 lb bags of feed and fill countless 1 gallon waterers around on our farm and which most days really gimps me up. She gave me a concoction of Raspberry Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar of which I have been taking 1 ounce every morning. The Raspberry Juice takes away the stinging acidic bite that Cider Vinegar has ( especially the Organic type with the Mother). I am happy to report that after taking it for 2 1/2 weeks that it is actually working. There is no aching neck and my shoulders, wrists and thumbs are much better. The fruit juice can be any berry and the mix roughly 1/2 and 1/2 though the less juice you can use the better for you as it is really the Apple Cider Vinegar that does the job. I thought that I could be tough and take it straight but it is pretty powerful so my mix is probably 2/3 juice to 2/3 vinegar.. Anyway thought I would share this with the group - I lurk most of the time, especially as my computer time is very limited usually late into the night after a fulls days work outside. We are all getting older every year and shall all start paying for the sins of our youth and abuses to our bodies ( be it sports or over-extending ourselves when we are young and feeling bullet-proof). It is nice to know there are natural ways to help ease us gracefully to a ripe old age. I enjoy lurking here very much - and am learning much about Vegetarian cooking. I am working my way to a healthier lifestyle food wise. I appreciate the creativity of all who post recipes and variations - and am in awe of all of you. Wish I had that knack - however my creative flow is directed most strongly into designing and creating Log and Driftwood Furniture - working with wood is my passion. But after a long day I also enjoy well cooked and simple meals cooked from scratch. Thanks again and do try the Cider Vinegar if your koints ache - it is amazing stuff, Cheers from Black Creek on Vancouver Island, Heather
Guest guest
Hi Heather, Thanks for sharing that. I've also read that drinking apple cider vinegar helps keep mosquitoes from biting but haven't verified. I'd love to see pics of your work - are there any in the group album? Guest guest
Perhaps your doctor would be interested in what Dr. John McDougall has to say on the subject: --- All minerals, including calcium, come originally from the ground and enter animals through plants. Thus, plants are loaded with calcium, iron, zinc, copper, etc., and the more plants you eat the more minerals you acquire. The relationship between people and plants works so well that there has never been a case of dietary calcium deficiency ever reported – in other words, all natural diets are sufficient to meet the needs of growing children and adults (infants need breast milk). Calcium pills have a few adverse effects like constipation and inhibition of iron absorption. The most serious mistake a person can make is to believe cow's milk is a " good " and necessary source of calcium. Heart disease, cancer, type-2 diabetes, arthritis, and infectious disease are only a few of the common consequences of drinking milk from other animal species. --- If you’re interested in further reading, try this: http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2007nl/feb/whenfriendsask.htm Anna - V S <onmission55 Tuesday, June 10, 2008 6:08 AM Calcium Thanks guys for sending me you typical diets.. Guest guest
Hi V I know you've had a few answers to this already but... if you've got very low calcium, then NO dairy is the best thing you could do for your bones! It may also help with your weight, if you need to lose some. www.pcrm.org has info, written by doctors, about calcium and dairy. Best wishes Alice On 10 Jun 2008, at 22:08, V S wrote: > Thanks guys for sending me you typical diets.. > Will help me a on in my own venture.. > However have one doubt. > I have very low calcium. Guest guest
collard green has almost twice the calcium as milk. Plus you need vitamin D to absorb the calcium. Take a multivitamin, and get at least 20 minutes of sun a day to get your daily dose of vitamin D. Thats all I have to say about that.V S <onmission55 Sent: Tuesday, June 10, 2008 6:08:20 AM Calcium Thanks guys for sending me you typical diets.. Guest guest
The others have already had some great suggestions regarding diet and the " big picture " with animal protein. I am in a similar boat in that, for relatively rare genetic reasons leading to a connective tissue disorder, I have osteoporosis (dx. age 26). Be sure the calcium meds you're taking are dissolving/being absorbed properly. I buy vegan chewable calcium plus D2 plus K from Trader Joe's (fruit kind is vegan, chocolate kind is NOT) and I have found these to be much more absorbable, and much more affordable than buying liquid. I tried powdered kinds but it was difficult to stomach that for me. Also, be sure to have your levels checked relatively regularly, both for calcium and D. With your diet change (and possible supplement/med change), you may need *less* and you don't want things going out of whack. Hopefully your doctors will understand this and order regular, more frequent tests as your body adjusts to its new intake. Hope this helps, --Colleen , V S <onmission55 wrote: > > Thanks guys for sending me you typical diets.. > Will help me a on in my own venture.. > However have one doubt. > I have very low calcium.
