Indeed, there was even a class action lawsuit brought against McDonald's

for vegetarians (particularly those with religious reasons for the diet).

I'd received the paperwork back then, just out of curiosity (I don't eat

there, so had no intention of joining). Compensation looked to be tied

to frequency of having consumed their fries over the timespan in question

and reason for being a vegetarian, with religious admonitions weighed

more heavily than, say, animal rights. As you can read in the news

pieces in the link above, the dispensation was not without controversy.
