Anyone ever fasted? A girl told me that she bought a colon cleanse from GNC and fasted for a while and she lost 30 pounds. She said she drank a lot though. I have actually read that it is good for your body to do this once in a while. Any thoughts on this?Nikita

Define " fast " ....did she literally only consume liquids for a lengthy period of time? I definitely don't recommend it.

It's been years since I fasted. I used to fast on freshly made apple juice, diluted a bit. Never done a water fast. The longest I ever went was two weeks. It's very important to enter a fast and especially to end a fast, correctly. Gradually adding back in fresh foods. Hopefully there is someone else on here that can help you more than I can. I followed Paul Bragg's book on fasting: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw?url=search-alias%3Daps & field-keywords=paul+bragg%27s & x=0 & y=0. There are many other books on the subject now. It's really not a worthwhile activity, because as soon as you start

eating again you regain any weight you may have lost.

Ah, yes, didn't Oprah and Robin, Howard Stern's sidekick, go through the

whole MasterCleanse thing a year ago? Everybody and his brother was

doing a " cleanse " after that for a while. The HFS ladies laughed at them

all when they came back the next week complaing of nearly constant

diarrhea. It seems they didn't realize that drinking the licorice tea

and drinking nothing but liquids would give them the runs from lack of

solid food. Sure, they lost weight, but it was mostly water weight.

They got cleansed, all right! LOL

Eating tasty high fiber fruit and veggies & whole grains keep you clean

enough. Read Dr. John McDougall's book called Dr. McDougall's Digestive

Tune Up if you don't believe me. :)

Nikita,My husband has completed two fasts (water only) in the last 18 months; one for 28 days and the most recent was for 30 days (he just came off of it at the beginning of this month). It is well established that fasting is therapeutic for a number of health problems; for him the driving motivation was lowering blood pressure without starting medications and the pending birth of our daughter - he definitely wants to see her grow up. He followed a protocol from this journal article:

http://www.healthpromoting.com/335-339Goldhamer115263.QXD.pdfBefore his first fast, his blood pressure was averaging around 200/120; his blood pressure stabilized after the fast to average around 115/70. He lost >50 pounds during the fast and continued to lose weight upon reintroduction of a very low salt/very low fat vegan diet, hitting a total loss of >100 pounds. He hit a stumbling block in December when his mother passed away (he gained about 25 pounds as a result of eating too many nuts and seeds - you can gain weight on a vegan diet), and started the second fast to refocus his efforts as much as anything else. He has lost the 25 pounds and continues to lose by eating a diet described by Joel Fuhrman in Eat to Live. He has never taken blood pressure lowering or cholesterol lowering medications and it doesn't appear from his blood work that he needs to.

Here are some of our experiences worth noting:Physical activity needed to be limited during a fast; he could get tired rather easily. He was still able to keep up with our 10-month-old daughter, walk around the grocery store, and keep up with our garden (for the most part), but extreme physical activity was tiring.

Reintroduction of foods began with a day of juicing for every week of fasting. The fast itself was not directly monitored by a physician, but he had blood work done once during each fast to check for any potential problems or imbalances. The results were clear of both.

The second fast seemed to be easier (he had been eating much healthier than before the first fast; his body had much less detoxification to do).The sensation of " hunger " passes after the third day or so. During the second fast, after 30 days he experienced what Dr. Fuhrman describes as " true hunger " which is felt at the back of the throat (as opposed to " toxic hunger " which is what is usually felt in the stomach " ). He decided at that point to end his fast.

I hope that this is helpful to you; if you would like to know anything else, let me know.Angie-- Angie Steelman " ...we live to survive our paradoxes... "

I am confused on why we would need to fast to lose weight if we are already eating Vegan. I am still losing at least two pounds a week and have lost 34 pounds now since March 19. I eat all I want, just strict vegan, no sugar and limiting oils. Otherwise I eat like a pig.

Shouldn't eating vegan cause our weights to balance to normal? What would cause excess weight if we are truly eating vegan?

This sounds like a dangerous fad-type diet. We all have different health issues. Better to get advice from a doctor if eating a solid vegan diet doesn't happen.

Yes Shelley... you're doing fantastic and I think your body will

balance to the correct weight doing just as youare... just keep very

close watch on adding fats

More calories consumed than burned. It doesn't matter if they're from

animal or vegetable, if you eat more than you burn, they will be

stored as fat. Plenty of us who have been vegan for years are over

what society says is a " normal " weight.

Angie,

Nice post! I am beginning a series of fasts and am curious what type

of blood work your partner received? Did he do any other form of

monitoring such as a stool analysis or pH/litmus paper?

Thanks again...Tymothy

Yes I read last month in People Magazine that Robin Quivers did the 21

Pounds in 21 Days cleanse. She said she actually lost 24 pounds. She

then went on to say that after it was over she didn't know what to eat

so she went vegan! She has lost 64 pounds all together so far.

I am getting ready to read the book Quantum Wellness and check it out.

I need to do something to jump start and motivate me. :)

Thanks to all of you for your help! I am also going to get a copy of

the Dr. McDougall's Digestive Tune Up that was recommended. I

bookmarked both of the links that you guys sent me... going to check

them out now.

Peace,

Nikita

Because just eating vegan alone doesn't necessarily mean you'll lose weight. There are still calories and fat in vegan meals. On Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 7:21 PM, Shelley <moondrop000 wrote:

Fasting isn't just for weight loss. There are a number of claimed benefits.

Same here. Eat like a horse - all vegan, low fat, low-to-medium

glycemic. Two pounds per week like clockwork - 53 pounds since the end

of January.

All kinds of things. Metabolic disorders are the most common.

Metabolism maybe.... too many fats probably...

Metabolic disorders can be quite insidious. I've watched someone with

a thyroid condition struggle to lose weight, even on a low-fat vegan

diet. It's one reason why I'm careful not to judge others.

Hi Nikita,

I usually fast at least three times a year for a minimum of

two weeks...and have been doing so for over 4 years. There are

a number of reasons why people fast and it's hard to explain to

someone who hasn't done it how good it makes you feel.

For everyone who says it's no good, there is someone else who

raves about it. The naysayers are usually the ones who have

never tried it because they don't " think " they could. Well...as

Henry Ford said... " Whether you think you can or you think you

can't, you're right " . That's because, to me (and this is my

opinion only), it is probably about 80% mental. You can't just

decide one day to fast for a couple of weeks. You have to

mentally prepare yourself to do it.

I started when I stumbled on a book written back in the 60's in

an old book store on fasting. I decided to give it a try and

my first fast lasted 28 days. I did a week of water only, then

added freshly squeezed juice 3 times a day as well. After that

I felt so good that I wanted to make it a regular thing so I

started reading everything I could about fasting.

Yes, I have done the Master Cleanse and I think it's fantastic. In

fact, I'm currently on Day 8. I've tried a few different ones

depending on what I feel like at the time. I find, for me,

that on water only fast I become quite lethargic. Having said

this though I think it can be beneficial as well so I usually

start all my fasts with a water only for a few days to a week.

This time, however, I did three days of fruit only before starting

the cleanse and will probably have fruit only for a few days at

the end as well.

Don't be afraid to give it a go...if it doesn't work for you, then

stop. Simple. But don't let anyone scare you out of trying it

for yourself, the rewards are worth it. I had at least three friends

who said they could never go without eating for more than a day, but

decided they would give it a go and they ALL said how much easier

it was than they thought. Yes, you have your good days and your

bad days, but the healthier your diet is the easier it is (again,

my opinion).

Sorry for the long post, everyone, but fasting is something that I

feel strongly about and I can't sit by and not voice my opinion

when I have experienced how good it can make you feel.

Regards,

Kathy

Here is the book... http://21-pounds-in-21-days.com/

I requested a copy from my library and read it, but I am not going to

do this because the author says you must get a colonoscopy three times

during this diet to totally " clean out " your insides and I do not have

a lot of money at this point in time.

Omgs. You do NOT need to do a colonscopy once let alone three times!

I think the author is a quack and on crack.

Susan,

That is disheartening. I wonder why. I had hoped all vegans were thin! This is all new to me. But I have to admit I see a lot of vegan recipes full of oil and sugar. That surprises me.

Um, NO. Definitely not. I've met many overweight vegans. People who think that being vegan means you'll lose a ton of weight are kidding themselves. It's all about eating healthy and exercising. As a vegan I'm working on shedding about 10 or so lbs myself.

This reminds me of something I heard 20 years ago when I first became

Vegan. It was a standup comic and I can't remember his name but

somewhere in his routine he said:

" Scientists have discovered what makes people fat... IT'S FAT... "

So there you have it neatly put in 9 words.
