Guest guest
It's almost been two weeks since I stopped eating meat. I found out on Sat. that I am pregnant. My boyfriend's mom said I will have to start eating meat again. This isn't true, is it? I will be taking prenatal vitamins, of course. Is there anything different I should do? I'm basically going vegan (still haven't given up cheese and eggs yet) and trying to give up artificial crap.
Guest guest
No of course not. That argument presumes that eating meat is healthier, and vegans are following an inferior way of eating. The truth is a vegan diet can be much healthier than an omni diet, or it could be less healthy (if you were to fill up on vegan junk food). I would recommend eating healthy foods whether vegan or not. Here are some links to information you might share with your boyfriend’s mom if it will ease her mind. http://tinyurl.com/5klsq2 Anna On 12/8/08 9:52 PM, " nannikin " <nannikin wrote: It's almost been two weeks since I stopped eating meat. Guest guest
Hi, and congratulations on your pregnancy! Your baby is so lucky that you've made all these improvements to your diet, because you're giving him or her a much better start in life. I would recommend getting really informed about your diet. Now that you're pregnant, almost everybody will feel it's their business to criticise your diet, and you need to be able to handle that (mostly so that you're clear for yourself about what you're doing and why). 'Becoming vegan' by Molina and Davis is a widely recommended vegan nutrition book. the podcasts at www.compassionatecooks.com are full of info, too. I've also found the vegan parenting very helpful. Guest guest
I also really found helpful during my pregnancies, The Vegetarian Way, by Virginia Messina. Also, the book, Super Baby Food (it's loaned out so I cannot look up the author) was a fabulous book in feeding your baby and children. It has you prepare nutritious purees in advanced, divide them in ice cube trays to freeze, then pop the frozen cubes out into individualized freezer bags. Then, take out the quantity your baby is eating, and let thaw or microwave. It really saves soooo much time and you know your baby is getting the best. It has recipes like pureed beans/almond butter, avocado and avocado/banana puree, etc., etc. And my babies loved them. Guest guest
Nope, you don't have to start eating meat because you're pregnant. A resource that might be useful to you is the book " The McDougall Program for Women " by Dr. John McDougall. There are chapters specifically addressing pregnancy and breast feeding while following a low-fat vegan diet. Best of luck! Guest guest
Congratulations on your pregnancy! You don't have to start eating meat because you're pregnant. I never did and I was very pregnant. I found Pregnancy Children and the Vegan Diet by Michael Klapper, MD to be very helpful for me. In addition to this book and the excellent info others on this list have given you to read, you might want to check out: http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/veganpregnancy.htm http://www.childbirthsolutions.com/articles/pregnancy/vegandiet/index.php http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vsk/pregnancy.html http://www.vegfamily.com/vegan-pregnancy/index.htm The articles by Dr. Reed Mangels are excellent. Hope some of this is helpful. God's Peace, Gayle
Guest guest
Gayle, LOL very pregnant? I've said that too-I had 4 kids in 5 years. Anyhow I was vegan with the first 3-the last child was conceived when #3 was only 6 months and I did " feel " I needed some animal protein such as fish & eggs butI don't really think so. Anyhow all 4 pregnancies healthy & homebirths-including the 3 vegan ones. Em , " Gayle " <dilemma5 wrote: > > Congratulations on your pregnancy! Guest guest
Congratulations! What a lovely piece of news! I, too am pregnant - 18 weeks today and enjoying my baby bump!!! I have not given up vegetarianism and I have confidence that my protein needs are met. Along with the books that others have offered, I suggest Holly Robbins Vegetarian Pregnancy - it will make your mind spin when you read the lists of what veggies and fruits offer in the way of nutrients, protiens, etc. I also read Susun Weed's The Child- Bearing Year. I am currently using an herb-tea recipe to supplement iron; as I am showing to be a bit anemic (too tired to eat sometimes!). According to Fuhrman, " Your protiein needs increase in diret proportion to the increased caloric demands and your increased apetite. Gues what? You automatically get enough. The same is true during pregnancy " (he was speaking about atheletes). He goes on to say " When you meet your daloric needs with an assortment of natural plant foods, you weill recieve the right amount of protein - not too much, not too little. " Eat to Live (pg. 140) I wish you the best in the next 9 months and beyond! Gwen , " threefatesfiber " <maryl4 wrote: > > > Nope, you don't have to start eating meat because you're pregnant.
