Fiber and Iron

A few months ago I've read that if you need iron in your blood that

you shouldn't eat anything high in fiber right after you take your

vitamins. That the fiber has a chemical ( I don't know the name )that

washes the iron out of your blood. We vegans need as much iron as

possible, and so I've experimented on myself. The results were true.

For some reason I feel zapped if I eat higher fiber foods after taking

my vitamins. Now I eat things low in fiber in the day, and I eat

higher fiber things at night Am I wrong? Thank you for your time.

Simply by virtue of being vegan? I’ve never heard that before. I’m one vegan who definitely does NOT need as much iron as possible — quite the opposite. I can’t take any supplements that have iron in them and have to donate blood regularly to keep my iron level in check. It’s called hemochromatosis and it’s quite common actually — a hereditary thing, they do genetic testing to determine if you have it. And if you do, it’s likely your family members do as well. You wouldn’t notice any symptoms, but left unchecked it can cause very serious problems, so I recommend everyone be tested.

My mother just found out she has this (she is 55)-we are the family

who live a very long time, generally healthy as horses...so it was

quite a shock! The treatment does work, although there is no cure, she

said.

now my brothers, myself and my children are all getting tested. she

told me it usually shows up in your 30s-40s.

sorry you have this:(

This year I also was diagnosed with hemochromatosis, which was always strange as a teen (many years ago) I was quite anemic with weekly shots (which my parents at the time blamed my dietary intake - aka vegetarian). My mother was also diagnosed as anemic. So I was dumbfounded that I had this diagnosis. A great book to read is the Iron Elephant. It was enlightening about the disease and the misdiagnosing.

No one in my family wishes to get tested, but now at least that has ended the dietary argument about getting enough iron in my diet.
