MOTHS, bugs in flour

Maureen,

I had problems like this about ten years ago. The first thing I had to do was clean out the area where I kept the dry goods - especially the corners. Then, when storing the foods, I put dry bay leaves in all of it. This worked wonders at keeping the moths and bugs away. The bay leaves imparted no taste to the foods and worked like a charm. It has been quite awhile since this happened but I still keep bay leaves in my dry goods.

God's Peace,

Gayle

MOTHS, bugs in flour

HELP! We have moths and little bugs in flour, cereal, popcorn, rice, and dry noodles. Please help me get rid of them, so I can eat my food. We are throwing out much of the food in our cupboards. I know to freeze them, but then give them to the dogs afterwards. All new flour is in the refrigerator. But, we can not store rice, cereal, popcorn, and do not have enough room in refer to store all of our grain. We are going to stop buying in bulk, but that is terribly expensive, and inconvenient as we will have to shop more often, but throw out less food I suppose.

Thanks for the help.

i freeze my bulk grains after bringing them home-after a few days, or

when i need them (sometimes longer than a few days) i store them in

the pantry, been doing this a couple years since my moth

infestation...so far no problems. bay leaves really do help, i agree

with the previous poster:)

There is the potential for weevils in all grain products, kinda gross when you think about it.

But they only hatch out when there is available oxygen. Try storing your grain

products in tightly sealed plastic bags. If you are buying say 50# bags, use trash bags.

Make sure they stay hole free & you should have no further problems!

Years ago I got the bugs in everything. I called pest control and we tracked down the home made floral things I had made with real flour. He told me to put all flour, grains, etc. in the freezer for 48 hours after purchasing. This kills any eggs in them. Then they can be put on the shelf.

I am afraid, however, that I had to throw away everything in my kitchen that was packaged and have him spray my cupboards. Then for one month I kept ALL packaged items either in my freezer or fridge until the pests were truly gone.

I have never had bugs again and freeze most things for the two days. A few are just left in the freezer, like oatmeal and bread crumbs and flour. Now I put them all in a sealed plastic container.

A method to reduce the kitchen moths (that get into grains,

chocolate and dried fruits) is to use bay leaves. Any product I don’t

put into an airtight container, I put a bay leaf near the opening.

I learned this trick from Lenore Baum of Lenores Natural Cuisine when I took

some of her macrobiotic cooking classes. She and I both used to live in Michigan. I now live in

Florida.

Lucky her, she retired to Ashville,

NC.
