Rice woes

Okay....

So I bought a very expensive fuzzy logic rice cooker....

Last night I cooked some Basmati brown rice and I used the brown rice setting on

the machine. I added two cups of the rice and filled the water up to the 2

line in the bowl... The rice came out good but starchy and sticky.

Is there a secret to cooking rice in a rice cooker where it is not sticky? Any

suggestions.

Secondly my neighbor picked an egg plant from her garden and gave it to us..

Its sure is purdy but other than that I am at a loss for what to do with it?

I've heard of egg plant parmesian but no oil so no cheese. Anyone have any

suggestions

What a nice neighbor! I like to peel my eggplant and then slice it up.

I put the slices on a baking sheet. Then I spread hummus on each slice

and top with tomato or onion slices. Maybe add a sprinkle of red

pepper. Yum! Tastes even better when it's cold.

Ooh, this sounds so good. I'm sorry, this is maybe a dumb question, but do the

eggplant

slices go into the oven before the hummus/tomato/onion, or after? Thanks!

Hi Shauna,

I put the stuff on the eggplant slices before putting it into the

oven. It just goes in the oven for about 10 minutes or so until the

veggies are soft. And it's even better the next day, cold. Yum.

ps I think it might be nice to add some pickle after it comes out of

the oven...hmmm

Oh, no, definitely don't spend $100 on a rice cooker! Our family had an Aroma

one, very

simple with the round glass lid and just one switch on the front, which we

bought five

years ago when dh and I were first married, which was great for us. But now all

the rice

cookers come with non-stick pots, which we realized would save us a lot of

scrubbing, so

a month ago we bought a new one for $40 at Target. It is also the Aroma brand,

round

shape, black and stainless steel, and has a setting specifically for brown rice.

It works

wonderfully, and we have never had rice burn or stick to the bottom. We cook

rice several

times a week, so having a really good rice cooker is important. I sure can't

understand

anybody wanting to spend the extra money for a fancy Zojirushi when the Aroma

ones are

wonderful...at least the ones we've had. There's a model that's very similar to

the one we

bought at Target on Amazon.com, except the one on Amazon is white and doesn't

have a

brown rice setting (the brown rice setting is the reason I paid the extra $15

for the one at

Target). The one on Amazon is here...it looks exactly the same except for no

brown rice

function:

Cooker/dp/B000HKFE8G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=home-

garden & qid=1224374225 & sr=8-1

Hope that helps!

I actually did get mine at Target. I had looked online first, but when I saw the

one with the

brown rice setting at Target, I decided to get it instead. So I'd check there,

hopefully they still

have it. (It was almost exactly a month ago that I bought ours.) I just posted

the Amazon link

because I wanted to show you approximately what it looks like, since ours isn't

displayed on

the Target website. Also, my instruction manual says that if the rice is burning

on the

bottom, mix in a little bit of oil before you cook it, as that might help...of

course that means

it's no longer fat free... But if you do get this one, it shouldn't be a

problem...we've never

added oil, and the rice always comes out beautifully.

I bought a 16-c. Aroma at Wal-Mart for my son. I had bought one at a kitchen store several months ago for my daughter. My kids can't live without a rice cooker. We use it all the time for brown rice. Just use more water. There were directions with her machine. I have heard that you can use 2 c. water per 1 cup brown rice. I just use 1 1/2 c. water per 1 c. brown rice and have never had any problems. The measure that comes with the machine is about 3/4 c. I have done this for years (19). None of the rice cookers I've used have glass lids.
