omega 3 - where do you get yours?

I was just listening to Vegan Freak Radio (podcast) and someone

voice-mailed in about having a little mini-stroke that resulted in a

blind spot in one eye due to a blood clot This was almost surely a

result of him not taking any form of omega-3 due to his veganism (so

his nutritionist said). I kind of add flax seed and walnuts to stuff

here and there, but I think I'd like to step it up a little - curious

as to how others are getting theirs!

Thanks -

We just bought some "shakers" from Costco that have Omega 3 and 6 combined..... It didn't appear to have animal produces in it and was based on Flax with a dried berry... So we started adding that and the nutritional yeast to our diet...On a side note... I got bloodwork done after 3 weekd McDougaling... My total cholesterol (which was 237) is down to 170. I do the same thing you do; a little flax and a bit of walnuts.

oh, that sounds scary

since this is fat free and the things I use for omega are high fat i

wont list them, but what i did was scour nutrition books and make a

list of omega-3 products - its a short list - then try to include one

or two day, general at breakfast so I dont need to remember it for the

rest of the day

This sounds like mere conjecture to me (to put it politely). Why "surely" and why omega-3s? How does the nutritionist know that?

The only thing a vegan won't get on a

varied healthy diet is Vitamin b12.

Hmmm.... Your statment is partially true. The only thing we won't get is the Vitamin B-12. But as "fat free" Vegans we do run a risk of not getting Omega 3's and 6's without "planning". In all fairness, I think that the spirit of the original post was to suffice that necessary planning to ensure we are getting what we need in our diet. This has been a good learning discussion to me.

A vegan can get B-12 without a problem on a vegan diet. There are plenty of fortified foods out there that are vegan; many brands of soymilk, some rice milk, tofu, fortified cereals, and nutritional yeast to name a few.

God's Peace,

another thing that we could be missing is iodine. if you are using sea salt

that does not

contain iodine, your levels could be really low. a vegan diet does not have many

sources of

iodine.
