Guest guest
A couple other thoughts about omega 3. 1) First-hand stories of listmates notwithsstanding, generally I don't think it's a good idea for veg*ns, or anyone, to use the familiar " I didn't [or did] do __________ and my kids turned out just fine... " Sure, our kids have no brain development problems, but are they as smart as they would have been if we'd remembered to take more flaxseed oil? We don't really know. Also, what was fine for one kid is not going to be the same for another. Maybe one mother gets enough omega-3 in her diet, and another one doesn't. If we use the " turned out fine anyway " argument, what, then, is our response to meat eaters who say about their health being " just fine " despite a lifetime of eating ribs and steaks? How do breastfeeding advocates respond to those who claim they were raised on formula and turned out " just fine? " Just something to think about. It's a weak argument, it works both ways, and I prefer to use fact and empirical evidence, not just offer up my brilliant son as proof (although the daycare thought he was turning 5 next week, not 4). 2) AFAIK, there are only two easily-found completely vegetarian/vegan sources of omega-3 capsules on the market: Omega-zen-3 (from www.veganessentials.com) and Health from the Sun's vegetarian flaxseed oil (organic is available; make sure it's the *vegetarian* version as they also sell it in gelatin capsules), which your local hfs can probably order. But buying a bottle of oil is much more economical. Buying flaxseeds in bulk and grinding them daily is probably still more economical, though I haven't done a cost comparison. And the oil is fairly versatile (see my article at vegfamily.com for ideas) so it's not that hard to get it in the diet, once you get started. 3) [Note: in scientific papers, " omega- " is replaced with " n- " , which I will now use since I'm tired of typing omega....] Generally speaking, the American diet (and vegetarian ones) get too much n-6, and not nearly enough n-3. It's not so much that you have to get more n-3, but you have to reduce n-6. The balance is important, yet there's not really any way to know if you've got the balance right. I just try to limit n-6 and increase n-3, and hope the balance works out. Evening Primrose Oil has no n-3, is high in n-6. Hope this helps - though I fear I may have muddied the issue! ~Doh
Guest guest
Omega 3 fatty acids are found in flax seed as well. ) google it, there's a few ways of getting it. xoxoRobyn do you know how can I take omega3 from vegetables. I've learnt that omega3 has an improving effect on brain facilities and could be useful to youngsters as I am. Is there any way to take it instead of fish? Guest guest
You can get it from flaxseed oil Duygu. I hate the taste so I make it into a salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. If you buy capsules, check to be sure there is no gelatin, or that it is a vegetarian source. Perhaps someone here can recommend a vegetarian line of vitamin capsules? Guest guest
I grind up flaxseeds and sprinkle over my foods. I add a little flax oil to salad dressings and eat over my salad greens. Guest guest
VegLife, I think, makes a veggie cap flax oil supplement. I know they do a Vit. E and an Evening Primrose supplement, plus a lot of other things you usually can't find in vegetarian form. ~Rachael http://veggieable.blogspot.com Everyone is raving about the all-new Mail Beta. Guest guest
When I posted about what the nutritionist said about the omega 3s I did not put it in quotes so the word 'surely' was not necessarily the exact term. Don't take my post as verbatim from the call. You can go to the veganfreakradio website if you'd like to hear that podcast - it's their latest one - #101. I just really wanted to find out what others were doing and how much flax or walnuts or whatever people were eating....Thanks -
Guest guest
I have been on Dr. Esselstyn’s Whole Food Plant based diet with no oil for almost 2 years now. The only omega-3 in my diet is from 2 table spoons of ground flax seed a day. My blood work is optimal. John On Behalf Of R.G.
