Hi Jennifer

It's good to have you here. I think dairy causes a lot of health problems -

glad you are feeling better without it.

You are absolutely better off with brown rice. The brown basmati is wonderful.

Brown has a lot more nutients than white.

hi rebekah,

welcome to the feral vegetarian! it's a great group.

a vegetarian diet is certainly healthier for humans

and the environment. i think vegetarians tend to eat

a wider variety of fruits and vegetables and the

phytonutrients from them help treat/prevent all kinds

of diseases.

hope you enjoy it here,

susie

Hello & Happy Holdays to Everyone!

I'm Cheryl and have just recently decided to dedicate myself to vegan

eating!

I am very, very new at this(2 weeks in!) so I need all the

help/advise/support/recipes that I can get!

Sometimes I think that I was crazy to begin this wonderful(and a

little scary!) journey right at the beginnig of the holiday

season, but I must admit I am feeling so much better! Lighter for sure!

lol! When I made this decision to go vegan, I knew I had to

just...start, there was no perfect time to do it....my body told me!

I kept getting sick and noticed when I ate meatless meals, I'd feel

soooo much better!

I have been reading everything I can get my hands on and now have a

ton of cookbooks...

I would love to hear about other's journies into veganland, whether

it's just started or you've been on the path awhile. Let me know how

you got here/there!

Take care,

Cheryl

Hi CherylI'm in Auckland, New Zealand. I was inspired to become vegan when I met my husband Billy 4.5 years ago - he's been vegan for more than 30 years! It's been a wonderful journey - I do feel healthier, but most importantly, I feel more at ease in the world because I'm living compassionately. I now run a totally vegan business, with the aim of helping make this diet mainstream.Welcome to veganism and to this list!Best wishesaliceOn 07/12/2008, at 8:03 AM, Cheryl Petratos wrote:Hello & Happy Holdays to Everyone!I'm Cheryl and have just recently decided to dedicate myself to vegan eating!I am very, very new at this(2 weeks in!) so I need all the help/advise/support/recipes that I can get!Sometimes I think that I was crazy to begin this wonderful(and a little scary!) journey right at the beginnig of the holiday season, but I must admit I am feeling so much better! I became vegan in April 2006 just three days before my birthday. My family

supported me thoroughly. For my birthday, instead of a cake, one of my sons

brought over some key lime tofu with a candle in it. I smiled while I ate it but

I hadn't developed my " tofu tooth " yet!

My husband and I took a CHIP course to learn about eating healthy vegan. He

understands but eats what he wants away from the house. I'm still vegan and now

so are two of my sons and one daughter-in-law. At least most of the time.

It gets a lot easier with time as you find your new favorite recipes. (and

develope your " tofu tooth!) LOL

Welcome to the fat free vegan lifestyle, Cheryl. I've been eating this way for almost seven years. Was vegetarian ten years of my adult life. Sandwiched in-between that, I ate very little meat while bringing up my omnivore family. My late husband developed kidney cancer. I believe his heavy meat eating contributed to it. Sadly, he died in a car accident though. So at least I didn't have to watch him suffer much from deteriorating health. I've remarried and my husband is also vegan, which makes it a joy to cook and develop recipes. Best wishes and your new venture. I commend you for making the change right now. It shows your commitment to improve your health regardless of outside influences. You're bound to succeed. Martha

Hi Cheryl!

I live in Australia, which means I don’t have access to most of the wonderful vegan products that are easily found in the States. I have been vegan nearly 2 years — my hubby is still an omnivore but willing to eat what I cook for dinner, which helps.

I went cold tofu — wasn’t even vegetarian first. I had read The China Study which convinced me to do it for health reasons. Then I read other books like The Food Revolution, and watched the movie Earthlings — and I knew I could never go back to eating animal products for compassionate reasons.

Cookbooks are great, but to be honest I find most of my favorite recipes come from the net — especially:

Susan V’s Fat Free Vegan Blog (http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/)

as well as occasionally from sites that are NOT fat free but often wonderful, like:

Tofu Mom (http://tofu-n-sproutz.blogspot.com/)

Vegan Dad (http://www.vegandad.blogspot.com/)

Best of luck to you and look forward to getting to know you.

Anna

Hi Vanessa, It's so important, isn't it, that family be supportive of one's

lifestyle. Frankly, I can't think of one good reason not to be supportive of

vegetarians and vegans, with all the good news there is out there these days

about the healthiness of the lifestyle (which is what is probably bothering

some). Well my dear if you do all the cooking then WOW you rare in control of

the kitchen and you get to do what you want, eh? (Oh, within reason of course

LOL)

Please post often hear - we love to hear from our members including new ones -

it keeps us happy and keeps us going!

Best, Pat (Co-owner with Cindi)
