Another Gas Question :)

I am a vegetarian who also eats dairy (mainly yogurt and cottage cheese) and

eggs. I have been eating this way since October of last year. I have a problem

with extreme gassiness! I hate to be graphic but I pass gas and it slips out

and there is no stopping it! I can't even be polite and get to a private place!

Do you all have any suggestions? I've been reading about beans causing gas, but

it doesn't seem to matter what I eat of my diet, just about anything causes it!

Help!

Thank you,

Jill

Jill,

There is a beano recipe on vegweb.com. You could also try drinking 2-3 cups of peppermint tea. I have been doing this for about a month and am pleased to say that I have very little gas now. I hope this helps.

Just to be safe, I'd want to go get myself checked by a doctor.  It's unusual to have that much gas, and you want to be safe rather than sorry - could be the start of something going on in there....JTOn Mar 17, 2009, at 2:46 PM, legalsec2504 wrote:I am a vegetarian who also eats dairy (mainly yogurt and cottage cheese) and eggs. For flatulence, you can also try a tea made of Mexican Mint Marigold or chew fennel seeds after a meal as is common among Asian Indians. You may have seen dishes of fennel seeds (sometimes coated with a sugar coating and sometimes mixed with coconut, often lightly toasted) at Indian restaurants.

I would eliminate dairy.  This can be a sign of a lactose intolerance.  Most people just pass it off as beans and such, but diary is usually a big culprit.

No I haven't, but I'm writing down the name and going to get some!

Two to three cups a day? I will try it! In fact, I believe we might have some

peppermint tea here at work. I'm going to the kitchen now!

Jill,

Dairy is a big gas culprit! The pasteurization process removes the necessary

enzymes to help digest the proteins and therefore causes mal-absorption and gas.

I suggest buying organic unpasteurized dairy if possible and also to incorporate

probiotics into your regimen.

Also, constipation is another side effect from high pasteurized dairy products

and commonly a cause of gas build up. Probiotics should help but it is best to

reduce your cheese intake. This is because casein (the milk protein primarily in

cheeses and cottage cheese) is much more difficult to digest than the whey

protein (found in yogurt and ricotta).

I could go on for ever on that topic (ha-ha) but basically if dairy is one of

your favorite food groups just make sure you eat/drink unpasturized and organic

varieties and maybe even try goat cheese replacements because it is much more

digestible and just as yummy.

I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

Ashly-Thank you so much for your info!

I am hesitant to eat unpasteurized dairy. I shall do some research on

probiotics though! And will look into goat cheese substitutions!

Thank you for sharing.

I also think you might want to try to give up dairy. I was embarassingly gassy all the time & when I gave up dairy products it went away. It turns out I'm not technically lactose intolerant, but lactose sensitive & caesin sensitive. It's prob worth going off it for a week and seein ghow you feel.

Hi JillWhy not try cutting dairy out completely for a few weeks - I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by how easy it can be once you get your head around it. And if you're interested in eating low-fat, cutting out dairy is definitely the way to go! It's designed to grow little calves into big cows... very quickly... As a practitioner, I always suggest doing a "Candida Cleanse" for patients with persistent flatuence.Candida in the bowels can build up over time leading to many issues (check Dr. Crook's symptom list - all over the web).I really like Jeanne Marie Martin's book, The Complete Candida Yeast Guidebook.Candida feeds on sugar (primarily), fermented foods and aged foods, fungus, beer, wine and other yeast inspired foods, vinegar and foods containing these products.Whole Foods makes a very good (I'm pretty sure vegan) cleanse called CaprylCare which should be used with a vegan based acidophilus (powdered is most efficient) to replace bowel balance. Many people forget that dairy (lactose) equals sugar and that's what exacerbates the problem.Just my two cents.Shen
